Figured I'd share some eye candy that came home with me from the Ohio (Nov 2013) Pen Show.

My personal collection of Sheaffer Snorkels will never top 15 pens, though I suspect >100 variants can be hunted. I've been playing with this series since finding a nice hoard of advanced color pens at a Raleigh (another Mawhorter show) Pen Show oh, maybe 5-6 years ago.

So, this tray of pens turned up at Ohio. One purchase/trade. There is some nice stuff here. Those who know will know. Those who don't are welcome to inquire.

Anyone care to ID the pile?   Casual Snorkel collectors can go years without finding one or a couple here.

I could ID them all but, what'd be the fun?  One question though, are those sage or fern?

Hi Roger,

Yah, that'd be like you tossing about a Vacumatic Tray only to have Davy hog all the fun naming 'em. Too easy.  Let's let the fellows who aren't one of the top ten collectors have a chance ;)

Seriously, my photography is that bad?  Or you have a bad monitor?  Sage is so... mundane.

Them there Snorks are olive enough to use in a martini.

regards

david

I've been trying to get to grips with this subject using mnemonics I start off with initials CASS SCVS CSAT M and then try to fill in all the details such as WD non WD nib shape and cap material.  I then write down all the colours in order of cachet and can do this quite easily now .  I cannot tell the model without seeing the nib but this is what my studies have come up with.  I practice by looking on E Bay to see if I can spot mismatches.

This is what I have come up with.  I only allow praise no nasty comments (Roger) if I make a hash.  At least I am having a go

Buckskin Tan Statesman or Valient

Peacock Clipper or Sentinel

Fern Green x 4 Statesman or Valient

Peacock Statesman or Valient

Burgundy Signature?

Black Autograph

Very nice, now is the 2nd from left a Clipper or Sentinel ? The guy on ebay from "The Memphis Pen Shop" reckons Peacock didn't come as a Sentinel, not what I though but now's as good a time as any to throw the question out there !! BTW casual Snork collectors can longer than a "few years" before finding some of those...

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

While he did not site all sources for his table, Sam Marshall in his 2002 PENnant article about Snorkel ( a "must read" for Snorkelers) does cite both models for steel cap Peacock pens, both Sentinel and Clipper.

I would definitely assume Mr. Marshall to be an expert on this and would assume he had every possible variation at one time, if in fact he still might.

Well, one reason he has one variant, is because I found it for him ;)

Trading among serious collectors can yield benefits.
