I have not completed my Ford patent pen collection but here are some nice examples.... The second from the left has not an original barrel, it was made to complete the pen by an English expert, the silver overlay in the third one is not from the factory... nevertheless they are all working and it has taken long time to put them together, hope you will enjoy them

My favorite is the second one.

Indeed Ariel, Penpractice is a great source of knowledge as is the Pen repair manual Mr. Oldfield and Mr. Marshall wrote. I have one and is very handy for repair works.

Penmex, That's a beautiful collection of Fords! The mottled ones are especially nice.

I have a large silver overlay like the third one in your photo.  You mention that all of yours are working.  May I ask if you restored them, or if you had them restored?  Mine is no longer working and I'd like to get it going.

I would love to be able to restore them but I am not, not even repair them, it is a complex although wonderful filling system. I bought them working, only in one case I asked Jim Marshall to repair one, long time ago when he did repairs for others, and Laurence Oldfield repaired another one more recently. Both are in England but I am sure there are other people at the FPB who could help you. If you have already repaired your pens with certain comfort the third (last) edition of the Marshall / Oldfield repair manual has even more information about Ford than the second edition and with patience you can do it.

No, any of them have the looking spade nib... in fact is the first time I hear about it. If by any chance you have one an image would be much appreciated.

A new barrel was turned for the second one indeed, it was not done for me but I was told when I inquire about the pen and I accepted it of course...

I've been dredging through the the darkest recesses of my memory to think of where I saw the spade nib. I have a feeling that it was in an article in the Writing Equipment Society journal by Lawrence Oldfield but I am not certain. There is one in the exploded picture on page 165 of Lawrence's and Jim Marshall's Pen repair book (1st edition at least) but it does not show it in it's full glory.

very nice collection--been looking for one of these for a long time but whenever i stumble into one on ebay, it's usually in dire need of repair, or way over budget

but i do love that domed, high-waisted, double-banded cap, so the closest i could get to it was through an oscar wilde ( i know--as they say, close, but no cigar!)

Might you be thinking of Macniven and Cameron's Waverley nib? (article here). Can't say I've ever seen one in a Ford.

According to this article by Oldfield, it looks like a spade nib is 2.5 mm across the tips, so perhaps a BBB in another pen?

I know what you mean, but this is spade in function rather spade in shape. Somehow you feel that with one of those nibs on the end of a Magnum sized pen you could dig the vegetable plot!

Just this weekend, at the San Francisco pen show, I scored my first two Fords. They have long been on my radar. Now, owning two (black Magnum and Standard), I have the obsession. Must have more! Ariel, my friend, if ever we are able to meet again, you must show me your collection. Yellow?!

Interestingly, my Magnum has French markings on the nib and is, of course, 18 Carat. I wonder if that is rare?
