This beat up lot of 2 Sheaffers and a Duofold pencil is $53 w/ 9 hours to go. A somewhat less common early post-war Admiral w/ a "59" sheath nib, but a bent tine and chewed up blind cap. A TM Touchdown or Snorkel w/ a split barrel and gouged cap. And a streamline Lady? Duofold pencil w/ a well worn '40s stripey Duofold clip. Near junk, but $53?

and what's with the extra N?

No one has said anything about "Patented in USA" - instead of the typical "Made in USA". Seemed quite unusual to me....

I only have one striated Sheaffer in front of me at the moment, and it has exactly the same imprint. The nib does say "Made in U.S.A.", but the barrel says "Patented in...".

In a sampling of one particular model in my Sheaffer collection, the wideband Triumph 1942-1945, I found "Patented in U.S.A." on the barrel more prevalent than "Made in U.S.A." However, this was not true of the Golden Brown striated models I have---5 said "Made in U.S.A." vs 2 that said "Patented in U.S.A." Though not a scientific study by any means (lol) and therefore apropos of nothing, the rest of the break down in my collection is as follows:

of 3 Carmine models- 1 says "Made in U.S.A."
of 4 Marine Green models - 1 says "Made in U.S.A."
of 3 Black models - all say "Patented ..."
of 2 Grey/Green - 1 says "Made in U.S.A."

(all the nibs say "Made in U.S.A.")

Is there any significance to "Made in U.S.A." rather than "Patented in the U.S.A." on the barrel? Did one come before the other, or is it just one more mysterious Sheaffer manufacturing quirk ?

For whatever it may be worth, I looked out of curiosity this morning and none of my celluloid Sheaffer's say "MADE IN...". My '29 Balance says "PAT'D - PATENT PENDING"; my early '30s pens say "PAT'D..."; and all my striated pens say "PATENTED...". My earliest injection molded pen, a black lever filling late '40s Valiant, says "MADE IN...", as do all my subsequent Touchdowns, Snorkels, and Tip-Dips. None, however, have a big "N".

In the process I noted that my latest Sheaffer, an early '60s Lifetime, has no barrel imprint at all.

If I were to draw a conclusion based solely on my own collection, I'd have to assume that Post-War Balance shaped pens all have a "MADE IN..." imprint while all earlier ones have some variation of "PATENTED". I guess this is why we try not to make too many assumptions... unless of course your collection is way bigger than mine.

Well said. A cursory check of my collection showed a dozen Balances with the MIUSA imprint -- and that's just among OSes.

I was filling one of Valiant II's the other night and noticed an N after the MADE IN U.S.A. imprint. I remembered there was a thread about this so came back to see if there was any information on the N. It seems nothing came of the topic.

I looked through a few other pens and found this one with an A in place of the N, and PATENTED IN U.S.A.:



Both of these pens are the earlier style Valiant II's with transparent barrels and color-matched sections. I have a theory about the extra characters... could the letters indicate that the pens were made for export, and possibly to which country or region? I purchased both of these pens from Europe. One came from Croatia and the other from the Netherlands. Of course I have no way to tell if they were originally sold in Europe.

Did Sheaffer export these pens after WWII?
