Hi all,

Below are pictures and the link to a recent eBay sale of a Chilton pencil circa 1930s in the 'clown' pattern. What an extraordinary price!

Any views?

Hi,

Seems somewhat high to me, though as always caveats abound.

Excellent pens probably are up in the $1000 range, retail. For good pens, matching pencils can cost $1/4- 1/3 or even bit more. So that gives a very rough zone for this. And, my estimate for the pen could be off. As often has been said, it takes but two motivated bidders to drive a price high. There are series that have grown more hot over the years. Parker 51 pens largely sell for well more than they did 10-15 years ago. Chiltons have had some aggressive hunters on the scene the last few years. I've had dinner with most of them ;)

One auction does not set the "typical" market, though it can reflect that of course.

Here are some Chilton "chopsticks" from my own wee hoard of pens.

Since I don't lurk around this board often, due to time constraints & poor typing skills, I hope this is the proper way to reply.

Yes, it was an extraordinary price for a Chilton MP, "clown" or not. I placed a rather high snipe on this. I was positive that I'd win the MP for far less than my $560.00 bid.
I damned near fell out of my chair when I found that I'd actually been outbid. I thought for sure that it would go for a max of $350.00. This MP doesn't come around that often on eBay, but since I cannot get to any of the pen shows, I was rather confident that any serious Chilton collector would choose that venue & these pencils would show up at pen shows on occasion. I still can't believe that these are that hard to find, but......? I'll still keep looking with the hope that the Fates did me a favour & I'll find a nice one eventually, at a more reasonable price. If you know who won this MP, please ask them to contact me. Perhaps we can work something out that would benefit both of us. If you have one of these, please e-mail me.
All the best,
Bill B

I had no idea what the final price of this pencil would be. However, the last one that I saw on eBay went for over $800 (not to me!), so in that context $570 seems almost reasonable. I did feel that $400 to $500 was a likely outcome of the auction but that past auction had me aware that all it takes is two bidders to make any outcome possible (as David pointed out). As always, the real measure of the value of an item is what a buyer is willing to pay for it...and one of the bidders who had driven the previous auction past $800 was still out there.

Is the price too high? I don't have one in my collection and want one badly, so if someone showed me that pencil at a show and wanted $600, I'm not sure I would say "no". I'd like to hope so, but if sales had been good and there was money in my pocket...

I'm not huge on Chilton pens, though I did have the opportunity a few years ago to buy a mint set, in the box, never used. At the time, I thought the price was to high, however now that I see read this I think $1200 for the pair was actually not a terrible price. The color really is stunning!

I'm fortunate to have both the ring top and clip model Chilton Clown pencils. I was lucky to find the clip model on ebay for a very fair price. The ring top model was obtained from a prominent hobby dealer for considerably more. The clip model is harder to find than the ring top in my opinion (by at least 3 to 1). Serious collectors will pay what this pencil sold for. I'd do it.
