This Waterman's flat top gold cap band is stuck onto the barrel. It does not move and it needs to be reattached to the cap. A very odd thing to happen. I bought it this way and now I would like to get it unstruck. Any one out there who has had this problem and knows how to fix it?

Hi June,

Note sent to our repair guys. I hope one will chime in by tomorrow. Suspect getting the band back on the cap is not such a problem. Getting it removed from the barrel might be tricky, depending on how it became stuck there.

I'm going to assume that there is cap still attached to the cap band because I can't figure out how the cap band would be stuck on the barrel since the cap fits over barrel and the band is bigger than the cap.

If so, I'd remove the section and put the pen on end and press off the stuck part. Some heat may help.

As I see it the gold cap band is at the bottom of the cap and it was screwed onto the barrel. It looks like it for some reason( it is a very old pen) came stuck to the barrel and someone just found the cap would not come off so used a bit of strength to turn the cap and the band remained on the barrel. That's my take on the problem. I may be wrong of course. This is not something I have come across before.

You don't suppose it could be a dealer demonstrator/ mockup with fused cap/barrel ?

If it has a couple big holes on the back to mount on posts...

Could you post a picture? It would tell us more and be much clearer, with fewer words.....

My favorite technique is to carefully, gently start warming the cap band with a hair dryer. Metal expands more than hard rubber, especially if it's closer to the heat source. At some point the expanded metal should get enlarged enough to simply be pulled off the slimmest end of the barrel (consider using pieces of rubber shelf liner or equivalent to keep your fingers cool). I use this same method to separate every pen section from every pen barrel that I disassemble, unless they fall apart as I examine them, and it has seldom failed me.

Hi June,

View the image in the Gallery. There should be "share the link" options at right. Just select and copy the text for the "BBC Code" option then paste that right into your post (you DON'T need to use the photo icon first, as the BBC code carries the tags the Photo Icon would usually generate.

Gallery is nice. It gives you far more storage than the upload-to-post option

I've just looked at your image and copied the BBC Code from the Share Image column. Pasting it now, we should see your image

I see a key part of the problem now. The ring did not slip and attach to the (narrower) barrel. The cap cracked and is stuck on the barrel with the ring on the cap as perhaps it should be.

It should be reattached to the cap but it is not moving anywhere without help.

Hi June,

I might be missing something but I think the cap is missing something too ;)

Please position pen obliquely and see if the ring really looks like it is fixed to the barrel or if there is a layer of black between the black barrel and the ring. I believe you have broken cap stuck on the barrel rather than ring, per se.

regards

David

Yes, I think you are right. I see black between the barrel and the cap band. Now what do I do? The barrel is very nice. Or if it won't come off it is good for parts. I think the heat thing may be the correct approach. How say you experts?

So yes I would remove the section and then heat the stuck part and press it off by pushing down on the stuck part with the barrel resting on the work bench butt end up.

Thanks to Autopoint and Farmboy for their help suggesting the heat and taking off the section so as to have a flat surface to work on. It worked very nicely. Now I have a parts Waterman pen. Thanks for taking the time to answer. Thanks to all the others to which helped me along.
