What would you do with the top pen in this picture? The cap is corroded through at the bottom of the inner cap - must have been pretty acidic ink. (The crud is adhesive residue from the athletic tape that was holding it together.) Great big flex, not wet noodle, #5 nib is what makes it tempting to fix up. My only thought thus far is to solder (or epoxy, so I don't melt the inner cap and unsolder the clip) a brass ring over the gaping hole; I've located brass tubing with just about the right ID.

If it were not hard to find a #5 cap, you would be best advised to do just that. However, doing that would deny you the fun of some sort of repair activity on the pen. That you didn't even mention finding a good cap, it seem evident that you fall into this category. I have seen a number of repairs for this very condition done with the addition of an outside band/sleeve that you may be meaning by "ring". It can be gold plated first and then sweated in place with silver flux and solder. If you want to be safe, take the parts to a manufacturing jeweler near you and have them do the assembly because the exact heat and experience to know what that is, is critical.
