In an attempt to lend order to the collecting fora, during the next few weeks, a rough subject list will be provided for each forum, covering most threads. Sheaffer so far is the highest volume forum at FPB. This is a good place to start for a Contents process. The list is not yet complete. The material below represents about 25% of current threads. Notice will be provided when it is current. Note that titles are general. Most threads are not guide articles, but start as observations, questions, and show-and-tell, evolving as they will.

--- 1/3 of threads now listed--

FLAT TOP (1912-1940)

BALANCE/Original Crest/ (1929-1941)

Sub-brand Sheaffer (WASP, UNIVER, VACUUM, etc)

1940's (Triumph Family, Touchdown, Tucky (starting 1940) and related pens)

1950's (™ Touchdown, Snorkel, PFM, Skripsert, etc)

1960's and later (Imperial, Targa, Lady Sheaffer, etc)

I recently purchased this beautiful gold filled overlay but can't find any reference to it in any Sheaffer catalogues or literature in particular with regard to the black end.

Any help would be much appreciated

PS This is my first time posting so I don't know how to create a new thread.

Hi Alex,

Tomorrow I'll split it into fresh thread.

Looks like hand engraved vine pattern.

Yes you are correct (as usual) on the pattern.  I'm interested in information on the black end and history/dating.

Thanks

Alex

Some time before 1923, judging from the catalogs in the PCA library.  The 1923 catalog says the metal pens are "full mounted."  The "circa 1922" catalog of giftie sets shows capped full mounted metal pens.  You can't tell in the older catalogs since all the pens are shown posted.  Roger Wooten would know the answer in a heartbeat.

Roger wrote to me: "Overlays with open ends are variations on full overlays. Looks like a 26E from 1920 with an open tail - a very interesting departure as open tails are less common and not documented"

Thanks all!
