My month or so of hunting "pen knives"--- knives decorated in period plastics similar to those used to construct fountin pens--- continues to be successful.

This one charms. The pen is a 1936-1941 oversized Balance. The pocket knife is fairly hefty for this sort.

David,
These knives are just way cool. I must be looking in the wrong places cause I never find them. It's kinda hard to believe that the pen companies didn't have at least something to do with 'accessories' like these. Even when I was a young'un carrying a pocket knife was just something you did. Nobody thought anything about it. When a boy became 'of age' he at least carried his boy scout knife with him. Be prepared and all that good stuff.

I've had a couple of Conway Stewart pen knives in the past which matched their pens and pencils (if anybody is interested Max Davis has a few on his final CS list) but all I have now are these two - not quite a perfect match, but similar

and somewhere there's an approximate Parker red one but I think one of the children must have "borrowed" it. I do look out for knives if I remember in the hope of getting more CS ones and just occasionally I come across ones like these two which catch my eye (and never more than £5). I use them to pick the remains of the old sac off the section nipple. The two pens in the picture are a Savoy and a Conway Stewart in what is known as blue rockface. I had thought the matches were closer but when I went to get them out for this thread I realised they were quite different. Still worth showing though I think.

Enjoy

It took me quite some time but I finally found the red-veined grey Sheaffer Junior and knife in a matching color. I purchased these together about 15 years ago and have stored them that way ever since.

I know that Bexley did a run of pens with knives in matching plastic a few years ago, using the same material intentionally and selling them as a set. I'm not sure that any of the knives we've come up with were ever intended to be part of a set sold by Sheaffer and others, but it is a neat coincidence to find the pens and knives together as seemingly part of a set.

Best,
Pat

I'm sure I've shown this set elsewhere, however it is relevant to the query.

Conway Stewart produced sets with matching penknives from the second half of the 1920s through until the late 1930s. This no. 77 set is in 'lapis blue' casein. It dates to c. 1930 and it is one of four different sets sold by CS that featured pens with matching penknives. These sets were generally made from casein, though mottled vulcanite is also common. They also sold the knives separately as we know they had cardboard counter display stands for the knives alone. Similar casein clad penknives are often found from this era in the UK but the genuine article is a two-bladed knife, with one of the blades marked 'Conway Stewart', and the general style of the knife is always as the example pictured..

These penknife sets are amongst the most sought after items of the pre-war era for a Conway Stewart collector.

That's just spectacular, Pat.

Not sure this ups the ante, but it at least is a call. The largest documented slab of circuit-board?

David -

A call indeed - very cool. I've never before seen the circuit board pattern on a knife, which seems to clearly date the knife to the depression era.

This game of collecting pens, and then finding out all the related collectibles that go along with them, can lead amazing places.

And Andy's Conway Stewart set is impressive. The box really sets off the contents.

Best,
Pat

Ah, you must have become involved in the knife discussions after I posted the very first "pen" knife I'd acquired (different thread). Here's that one...

Trying my first posting here without much luck in figuring out how to insert/attach image to the posting. If interested, click on link below (or cut and paste) to see image of a pocket knife with color pattern similar to the green/black pattern of a Paker Vacumatic. I picked this up last weekend at an Antique mall after reading/viewing these interesting posts. Now I have something else to look for with out hunting pens in the wild.

Jim

Hi JIm,

Nice knife. Since the image is already hosted externally, just click the photo icon in the posting box (the picture image two thingies to the right of the smiley face emoticon icon). That opens a wee box for URL address such as your photobucket link. Paste your link there, hit the "insert image" that appears with the box, and that should do it.

As Photobucket tends to be temporary or recyclable (images seem to vanish in time), you can consider uploading your image from your computer to our GALLERY (its own Tab at top of page, moving you away from the FORUM) where we provide free 25mb hosting to each member. Just create your personal ALBUM or use one of the ALBUMS already created. Then your image will still be with your post years from now :)

I recently saw a pocketknife on eBay in the Sheaffer ebonized pearl (abalone) plastic. I kind of wish that I bid more for it, but didn't think it would reach its final $100 selling price.

David,

The pattern of your Clipper is 4 rows of black and 4 rows of circuitboard. Examined closely, you will find that the circuitboard is alternating rows of (1) little squares of plastic glued into a strip and (2) more or less continuous strips.

Your knife, on the the other hand, is a pattern of 3 and 3. And, I bet, if you examine it with a lens, you will find that the pattern is produced solely by up-and-down ripples in the strips of pearlescent plastic, thus a closer match to the Eagle copy of the Clipper. Still an impressive knife, though.

Neat knife. I rather like the shape, which is less mundane than most.
