This ~1929-1932 Wahl, arguably an Equi-Poised, is most interesting.

Not your typical 'Poised.

Note the "X" Gold Seal. Note the odd shape and ends.

An X instead of two check marks! It's almost like they were warning the purchaser to stay away!

I suppose the barrel couldn't have become that bulged over the years. Or could it? Very odd.

I think of that barrel shape as being characteristic of the earlier Wahl Tempoint models.

Anyway, this is a pen that one is tempted to use that taboo word: "prototype." Has anyone ever located an definitive reference to these "X" pens? (Don, Syd?)

A very rare model, but a known one -- not a bulged barrel, could well be a prototype/test marketing design.

X-seal is still a mystery -- no hard evidence to date, still.

First, I am sorry that I have not been following this board regularly but having collected pens for over 45 years and having assembled a large Wahl collection I should pipe in more often. I have owned a number of Wahl pens with the X in place of a double check mark. The best is a set of Rosewood deco bands, pen and pencil, in rubber, not plastic so this means the set was either made of old stock or predated the 1928 version.

The pen shown in the thread is not new to me. Mine is in blue with the same cap and barrel ends. I always considered it an oddity - a somewhat transitional model. Nice to see it in another color. Congrats.

Wish I owned it ;)

No, I fear this one is not mine, though I was honored to have the chance to shoot it a few years ago. For some reason I thought it was yours, but apparently not. Perhaps it rests in one of the other 2 big Wahl collections.

I did shoot some of your Wahls at Chicago a few years back. Really must find the photo.

Here's one in black, branded as an Oxford.

Neat.

Looks short, but not quite Purse Pen short?

I'd call it 3/4 size. Actually, I think that this particular model is more often found in this shorter version, rather than the full-length version that started off the thread.

Since I have that one, it was probably shot by David at the LA pen show in 2007. I used to bring a lot of "Show no Sell" to shows... I also have that model in blue and orange plastic. Now for the X...Oh heck lets do a Dr. I on this one:

The "X" seal shows up on a number of different models after the advent of the original Gold Seal, not just the model shown here. To call it an X seal is only half of the information on the seal...it is an X inside an O. Or XO it could be a hug and a kiss but it's not...most of their children or grandchildren (such as we) might not recognize it but old manufacturers wholesalers, jobbers or retailers will recognize the significance of XO ...right? Now think "drilled seal" and now think chicken or egg.
