Hi Gabriel,

A grand selection. You have some that collectors hunting a lifetime won't find. :)

Is the RHR Swan a 48?

BTW, seriously, I once again urge you to join PCA before the next PENnant releases later this month. You will learn a great deal about some of the pens you hunt, with info presented that never has been shown anywhere online.

I don't know how to even start showing pens for a a thread such as this. It could take weeks. Maybe I'll add a few interesting pens here an there over time. This is a great idea. My own collection though offers challenges... I have a more than a couple really nice ones ;)

regards

david

Gabriel

I don't have many flashy pens, but these are some I do particularly like:

Onoto DLR sterling silver overlay

Cirene 18KR Continental Safety

Have a polished Titanium Waterman, a nice Sheaffer 'Rep's' Gold Targa, and some others I love, but I love them all for one reason or another.

I just happened across a couple of pictures of rare pens from my collection while I was looking for something else so I thought I would offer them as examples of some of those pens I consider 'jewels'!

The first picture is of a group of Dinkies from 1932, complete set of the four colours available from Conway Stewart in that particular casein pattern (though a cream variant was also used by other manufacturers, as in the Waverley set in my 'Interesting casein' gallery). The green and yellow variants are specially rare, they only seem to have been used for about a year. The contemporary trade advertisement in the background shows how keen Conway Stewart were to protect their Dinkie trademark!

Posted Image

The second picture shows a Dinkie & a Dandy c.1928 in a particularly spectacular red, white & green casein, also rare to find, especially without discolouration. The Dandy is showing some yellowing, especially on the cap (mostly I think from clear resin which was applied in the course of a repair)) but the Dinkie is perfect.

"Jewels" are sort of hard to pick out. One of the other sites asked for our 10 best pens. I picked these out - although I would put together a different group on any other given day. Anyway - some of my better ones.

Posted Image

From Left: Waterman's 0552 Gold-Filled Filigree Overlay over RHR
Waterman's Patrician Emerald Green - nice color, most of these are pretty dark
Waterman's 452 Hand Engraved Vine Sterling Silver Overlay
Waterman's 452 Sterling Silver Filigree Overlay over RHR
Waterman's Patrician Turquoise
Waterman's 94 in Rose Ripple
Waterman's 0574 Gold-Filled Overlay Pansy Panel
Wahl-Eversharp Deco Band in Chased BHR - a fairly rare model
Wahl-Eversharp Coronet with Dubonnet Pyralin Inserts
Wahl-Eversharp Deco Band in Lazulitic Blue

Okay, that's ten. The one on the right is a bonus, since it isn't really a production pen. It is a Parker Duofold Flat-top with a custom cap and barrel made from antique ivory.

Patricians are also some of my favorites.

Also Wahl-Eversharp Deco Bands.

I have some nice Duofolds, too - maybe in another post.

Another WOW  moment for me.
Thanks Allan for sharing your very spcific collecting.

As a by-line with the overlays... I am always fascinated by the cartouchés and any inscriptions, initials, etc.
Do you have any so engraved, and do you know the provenánce of the individual pens?

N.B. Do any of you with overlays have engraved cartouchés with any of your overlays and know their provenánce?

I just think it would be nice to know who owned these pens and used them.

very nice pens, congrats, esp, the patricians. what's the deal with the white (?) duofold? is that a prototype or a custom build?

When I bought it, I was told it was made by an artist in Portugal. All parts, other than cap material and barrel material, are taken from real Duofold flat tops. The material is antique ivory. Instead of a cap band, the artist simply cut a small circle around the cap. There was only one made, so it is unique.

The artist did make at least one other pen from ivory, I am told. It was another type of classic pen, but not a Duofold. Don't know what pen it was modeled after. All of this is information given to me by the person I purchased my pen from, so if anyone knows anything more about the artist or these pens, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Here are some of my Sheaffers that literally qualify for the category, all have jewels.

Targa Model 1065, Gold Fluted with an Australian Opal tassie. Shown are the Classic FP, Slim FP and Ballpoint.
Posted Image

Targa Model 1060, Brown Thuya with eleven diamonds mounted on the clip. This is the Classic FP.
Posted Image

Triumph Imperial reminder clip in Sterling silver with a diamond in place of the White Dot. The silver has been plated with a white metal, probably rhodium, to keep it from tarnishing. A good guess is that Sheaffer made a few of these for their executives or for employees with outstanding performance. The inset shows the front view of the diamond and its setting.
Posted Image

Targa Model 1003, Matte Black with Gold Trim and a diamond? mounted on the clip. The diamond on this one appears to be an aftermarket addition to a standard 1003. I have not verified what the stone actually is.

Well I guess I would have say the jewel of my collection is one of my pens that is worth the least in terms of money. It is an old Made in Canada Sheaffer lever pen I use back in high school. The pen has been through the mill.It has a different cap as I broke the one that came with it in high school. It still writes smooth but stops from time to time and needs a shake to get it started again. No amount of cleaning and tweeking has been able to fix that. The enjoyment and memories I get from using this pen are wonderful. To most people it is worthless but if I were to sell it, the cost would be more than all my other pens put together. Now to me thats a real jewel.
