Today one of the most exciting pens I've ever seen crossed my bench for restoration. It's a Paul Wirt hump filler in red mottled hard rubber. Someone had bent the sliding metal latch plate upward a little, but that was a quick fix. Resac, clean, tune the nib, and it's as good as it was when it rolled out of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. I just wish it were mine!

Unscrewing the blind cap pulls on a metal bit whose other end is the sliding tab that blocks the hump from being pushed down. This, as clunky as it may look, is an elegant, reliable, and safe filler — safer than a Conklin Crescent. And infinitely cooler, too.

Wow, what a mechanism! Are you still taking repairs? Ive got a few piston fillers than a restorer doesn't want to repair for some reason, though he does fix piston fillers.

Are you still taking repairs?

I'm sorry, we're really not.

This interest is one I'm sure will never stop being an adventure...if you can be surprised that leaves a lot of inspiration for the rest of us.
