Hey Dr. David,

Is there a schedule of events per month for the new club? Also, is there a date set for November and December?

Best,

John Martinson

Hi John,

Was thinking about this Sunday, but I headed out of NYC by sleeper train instead of by air, to avoid being tangled in hurricane, and did not have time to pack pens. Still happy to meet if people want, but I have no real show and tell this time. If not this time, could do week of November 13 Sunday or some such.

Thoughts?

Catch you later anyway. must sleep now.

Since you didn't have a chance to bring stuff out here David, perhaps we should postpone until you can. That's probably the next trip out here I would guess, which I guess is after Thanksgiving.

Would that be great, a kids free section! One can only hope. When you used to be able to smoke in restaurants, the hostess would ask us if we wanted smoking or non-smoking. Our answer was always "the no kids section please".

Sad, but for the Central Penn pen club meetings, I can say that my daughter, who is very much a kid, has been to every meeting. She's 11 now.

I think if nothing else, collectors should be encouraged to engage their kids into the hobby.

She has a nice esterbrook collection, and several Sheaffer's ringtops from the late teens.

I think the real issue is the parents of kids that don't behave.

PCA tries to engage kids, the future is always with the kids.

I have watched several segments of collectables dying for years, due to the fact that the members cannot garner young collector interest. Two examples, one being the Hudson Essex Terraplane club, I bet the average membership age is 70, it is a dying club. The obituaries take up 5 pages or more in the club newsletter.... Nothing has been done to foster younger membership. The attitude of the club members actually alienate younger membership.

The other club, the National Graniteware Society, my parents are members, they have no young membership. They have tried to figure out what to do, but I don't see them turning it around.

and as a sidenote, John... you would like my 7 year old. you know what his favorite pen is? a Parker Black Giant. I mean, come on... how could you not like a kid like that?

I hate to see the fountain pen hobby go down the same road. I do what I can with my two kids, who go to pen shows, to keep them interested in fountain pens. Hopefully, when they encounter collectors at the show, they are not met with the feeling of alienation....

Rick, I was being somewhat humorous. As far as kids involved in pen meetings, who wouldn't want that to bolster the hobby? My comments were mostly directed at exactly what you mentioned, kids that don't behave in a restaurant and parents that seem to be oblivious to it.

John;

You're point is always well taken. I think you saw four well behaved boys at the last Chicago meeting and they've had lots of exposure to pens. The older two have their own pens. Still, I generally don't take them to "old man" meetings (they thought we were generally ancient).

No question Roger. Your boys were great.

I was wondering if non pen club members would be welcome at one of the meetings.

I have some relatives in the Janesville area and I'd like to see the goings-on.

Thank you,
ken

More the merrier. The definition of "pen club" is rather loose. It translates as, "all those who want to play"
