Never liked introductions much, but here goes...

About me:

I’m only 47-- I say “only” because I left another html board for pens & opted for this one because... Maybe-- for the first time-- I’m encountering a generation gap.

Without being too long I hope, will give brief anecdote.

Ran across early Arthur Waterman overlay on e-bay. Was too worn away for my tastes, but pattern & date of mfg. made me curious.

So went to “Pen History” at a particular site.

Found nice, well written post about history of “Reform” pens; it got one reply.

Meanwhile another post: “Lamy Safari Colours - How Many?” Got a whopping 488 replies!

I had no idea the topic could be so difficult or contentious!

I’d think 3 primary colors; a truism to submit other colors would have to be a mixture of primary colors.

I see a master's thesis in this or possible possible journal article...

“Lami Safari Colours: a 24 Year Survey of ABS Plastic and Consumer Choices”

OK, probably not funny. We're not here for stuffed shirt peer reviewed journal articles (citation needed...)

But the 1980's are topics for history now? My undergrad days were from 1984 to 1988. Yikes! That's scary for me...

So anyway, signed up here-- hoping to learn more about Watermans and other overlay pens from fin de siècle to mid 1920’s.

Pens:

First fountain pen was a hooded version of a Sheaffer’s student pen. Probably not collectable, but still a sentimental favorite. Can remember still being able to buy them off the rack at the local “Five & Dime.” ( Although by the 70’s-- not quite five or ten cents anymore!)

A slender black Cross with gold trim got me through undergrad days until the gold top on cap came off. No idea what model it was, but wanting to replace led to use-net & "alt.collecting.pens-pencils"

Didn't find Cross model, but was interesting to see use-net dry up & my machine probably had more trojans than the fabled city itself!

First joined the html board mentioned above in 2008. Could never complete the registration process at another site (that I’m told was having problems at the time) so missed out on that one. I’m glad some who are members there still post occasionally.

Pens in Collection:

Not many...

Of Waterman overlays only two: a #12 in .999 Ag & a #452 in basket weave.

(Small world-- seller I bought them from is an adviser here!)

Parker 51 since my dad flew P-51 Mustangs in WW-II. He used a vac and later a “p-51 vac” to fill out his pilot’s log. (p-51 for a P-51 - makes sense)

(Small world again-- got the 1944 Parker from a fellow who is also an adviser here. Hmmmm...)

I do cartoon work with pen & ink so bought a Pelikan M600 Sony blue demo set. (Pel about same size as rapidograph & swappable nibs.)

(But now this is getting really weird. Gent who did the custom nibs is yet a *third* adviser!)

Enough to make a fellow paranoid & start peeking through the curtains-- "They're all on the same page!"

It's also a little intimidating with all the collective experience & knowledge here. Might lurk, or might just be the newbie I am & plunge right in.

Anyway, happy to have found site where I can hopefully find answers to questions I have about early pens & overlay patterns.

And if you've made it this far in a long introduction-- thanks for reading!

Can't let you off the hook - I just turned 59. You'll have to go back to the "young people's" board.

j/k...

It's a small population here, and not so chatty, which is why you haven't been inundated with "Hi!!!" msgs. But it sounds perfect for your needs, so welcome. The guys around here that know their stuff are very open about sharing that knowledge. Enjoy.

Right.

Back to 40 something board I go! Then to folks <40's... "Ah... I remember when I was your age..." <roll eyes>

About chatty though, have to admit I go straight to forum, post my question (or may comment) & bye bye!

Never a word of welcome to others & maybe that's a bit selfish of me, so thanks for encouragement & kind reply.

Hopefully we aren't too serious though. Silly sidebar:

As Newbie, will be form welcome committee & pad post total with insightful replies like "Welcome aboard!"

Agree with blown socks.

Question though.

Are we allowed to actually mention sites or names? Have feeling people know what 2 sites mentioned, but easier to just type XYZ board or A&B site rather than having to dance around actual names.

Oh & thanks for reply too.

Generation gap, maturity, or just different interests? Thought provoking. You strike me as someone who might be far more level headed & mature than people I know who are my age!

Anyway, thanks for compliment about pen gallery. Am glad at least one person had a gander that them!

With so many heavy hitters here, get the feeling it's like:

"That's nice you have a couple of overlay pens Bruce. And they are of interest to us because?"

Anyway, all the best!

Ive been told i do act older than i appear, and personally i take it as a complement, but i do reminisce of the past and how easy and a joy it is for little kids. For instance, in Michigan the cider mills are just opening up, and as you get older the reason to go or not is if you really need the "calories" from the donuts. But as a kid, it used to be such a great family trip and you'd get to play around on the hay and see all these animals and sit down for some cider and doughnuts. But, those days are gone, and i guess ill only get them back when i have my own kids.

Dont worry about the heavy hitters to much, stick around and before you'll know it people will be saying the same thing about you! Ive only been around for ~3 years, and im still continuing to learn.

Ah 47... The most random of all numbers! I think 47 is the best age one could possibly be, and will be sad indeed next May when I will no longer be 47.

I too had a black and gold Cross fountain pen, which I bought in 1985.

Welcome to the corner where the cool kids hang out.

Tim
