We have a nice thread evolving regarding pens purchased at the first Swann Pen Auction, Sept 2012, down on 25th street in Manhattan. Had nice time with pen show regulars Tom Heath, Rick Krantz, Paul Erano, Fred Rydr and others.

The core thread (with more images yet to come, at least by me) can be found here.

Swann Pen Auction Sept 2012 Pen Finds.

A significant portion of the auction was the Chilton pen collection that belonged to Bill Baisden, one of the planet's premier collections of that make. I own a few Chiltons and have sold a few over the years. Better still, I've had the chance to photo-archive collections belonging to Rick Krantz, Don Haupt and Charles Jefferson (iirc his name). I photographed in 2003 an amazing set belonging to Gerry Gerard, who must have been in his late 80's even then. He eventually sold it to Bill and at the auction it became mine... finally.

Chilton was a high quality smaller maker, with pens initially made in Boston, later in Long Island City, NY (iirc). The Wing-Flow nib (and eponymous pen) appeared in the mid 1930's. With the release of plastic pens featuring inlaid metal strips forming patterns and even letters, the Wing Flow series proved popular in retrospect with collectors. Few of them are inexpensive today.

I'll start this thread on the Chiltons I found at Swann with a monster, perhaps the... "king of the series".

So, I offer my key acquisition from the Swann sale, one of just a couple known (risky verbiage, yes, noting I know only of this set and have vague recollection Don Haupt might have one): the gold-filled Chilton Wing Flow

This one I addressed in the general thread on the Swann auction, but it fits well with this thread too.

I enjoyed the rare chance to cherry pick for my collection in a setting a bit different from the usual ebay and pen show rounds. I did manage to grab a few nice Chiltons.

This one rather pops. The pens are dummies (fused caps/barrels so caps cannot be removed) serving as Demonstrators of the new inlaid metal technique. This is a Wingflow type trumpeting across the three pieces "Yes It's New". First full set I've seen, noting I don't hunt Chiltons assiduously. I'll link soon to a Chiltons from Swann thread and include a few other non-Chiltons here.

But, here is the Demonstration set, one of about 15 lots I bought at the auction. Per the other thread, this set originally was found in the wild by David Nishimura, before being sold to Bill Baisden.

And a Chilton Wing Flow done in what appears to be Waterman "Gray" celluloid. Most Wing Flow pens are non-pearlescent monotone colors (as with the black set above). I'm not sure offhand if the solid black, burgundy, red and blue pens are celluloid or injection plastic. 1935 would be pretty early for injection plastic relative to Parker, Wahl and Sheaffer...

I am not sure what is more rare, the GF wingflow set or the "Yes" "its" "New" wingflows, but I nicely asked "Uncle David" to let me know when he grows bored of the GF wingflow set.

I just sometimes wish I had the $$$ to be more engaged, but I had to pick and choose what I figured i had a chance of ending up with at that auction.

Nice thing is that with Doc I owning it, we get to see pictures of it shared, and really, if I was dying to see it, he would probably bring it to a local pen show even.

It is probably the most key wingflow to own, there are very few, only ones I know of, are for certain, Don Haupt, and there is another one, owner unknown, but it is floating around out there. Considering the small group of die hard chilton collectors, it is still part of the inner circle, so to speak.

I am just hoping that sometime soon, we can get all of these chiltons together, and get book worthy pictures out of them. I think between a core group of us, there are enough examples of pens from the boston era to the end, summit, NJ, that we got it covered.

If you offer to shoot them, I will make sure I am committed to bringing them to Philly. I will even touch base with Don haupt and Hirsch, I bet they might participate as well.

I will be possibly tied up at Philly, with the maybe Auction, (shhh... don't tell yet... even tho I posted that secret to a public forum, more details to come) I will have time, and find time during the weekend.

Here's another Chilton set I picked up at Swann.

Large WIng Flow set in Burgundy, well less common than black, with an arguably "better" Z-pattern inlay. Summit-NJ imprint

I do have a respectable collection of black-and-pearl celluloid pens from the 1920's and 1930's, though i have not hunted that color with the same aggressiveness I've shown with Jade celluloid. Both these colors typically discolor significantly. I find it a bit easier to find really crisp Jade than black-and-pearl. The following pen was the best black-and-pearl Chilton in the Swann auction. Barrel is superb. Cap close. I've probably seen a couple black-pearl Chiltons with equal or better color over the years, but this one is quite nice. I'll likely keep this one at length.

the chiltons I added from the auction. the wingflow in particular I was quite excited about, especially after reading just how scarce it seems to be. I think the design is stunning.

I used to own that particular wingflow. and the pencil at the end.

small world. The wingflow there, is quite uncommon. It took me some time to find the proper cap for that one. I can say, that it is a solid pen, was not messed with.

I believe, if you look at the left side of the nib (words upright...) that there is a line in side of the nib, towards the base. I think this is the nib that went in this pen. It is weird, It is not a scratch, or a crack or a repaired crack, just a weird line, unless of course the nib was swapped by Bill. I wrote with this one for some time. Another pen, I sorta wish I would have held on to. I am glad to see it got a good home.

The pencil, I traded with Jim Stauffer, Autopoint extrordinare.... It was an OS early pencil in a flamingo pink. One of those deals where we got the proper makes into the proper collections.

Kinda neat to know some of the provenance.

thanks Rick for the info. The wingflow and the better of the two desk sets will stay with me for a while. The pencils have already made their way to Jon Veley for this collection, again getting the right pieces into the right set of hands. I had sold all my Chiltons a few years ago, not that I had many, but at the time I figured I'd rather add a few special ones when the opportunity came up. So for now the Chilton collection consists of the the two above plus a clown in the smaller size.

I was also quite pleased with the Tabo I purchased, another pen you just don't find everyday.
