Today I found two different 1935 Sat. Evening Post ads for the Chilton Wingflow. What surprised me is the ads note that in addition to patterns in gold fill, there were also inlay patterns in sterling. A 1937 catalog at http://www.chiltonpens.com/wingflows/ lists patterns in white or yellow gold fill and a couple in 14K. Can anyone post a Wingflow with sterling inserts?

Claiming no expertise, I wonder if some of the pens with white-metal inserts have sterling inserts rather than white gold-filled.

my thoughts.... are that the pens, even tho there was at least one advertisement that claimed sterling, were all in fact white gold fill.

but of course, I have been known to be wrong. I never saw a sterling insert wingflow, but hey... each day offers new adventure.

Oh, and I never saw one with solid 14K, either...

But I did see a diamond crystal wingflow with the initials "ASS" now who would do that....?

I figure it was some p/o employee at diamond crystal.....

I can't imagine anyone with those initals would actually, and proudly get them emblazoned on a personal item.

Imagine those parents, that's worse than a boy named "Sue"

I've definitely seen sterling clips.. In fact, my guess is that discoloration of any of my Wingflows with silver inserts has been corrosion and not brassing. You can get very aggessive polishing them and not find brass underneath. Tried this on really ugly spare parts, and wound up with really nice parts. I've got no hesitation about cleaning up silver inlays anymore. Discoloration is usually corrosion. It's possible, I suppose, that the clips were solid white gold. Don't think so, though. The purpose of the Wingflow, as expressed in the patent, was to reduce the use of gold and a solid gold clip would not have been part of the program.

I believe that the silver colored inserts in Wingflows that I've got are in fact sterling. Contrary to Rick, I don't think that I've ever seen a Wingflow with white gold-filled inserts. That seem reserved for the gold color inserts, where I haven't seen solid gold. However, the commemorative markers (Diamond Salt, George VI, etc, all appear to be solid gold. Don't know the carat, as it's not hallmarked. I do believe that Rick's Diamond Salt emblem is solid gold, not gold-fill, so he does indeed have a Wingflow with solid gold decor. I've never seen brassing on one the "emblem" Wingflows, and I've done some serious polishing on a "Veritas" pencil just to see what it would look like clean. If gold-filled, I would have done some damage (I only do stuff like this on spare parts until I'm sure of what I'm doing).

OTOH, I do have a couple of LIC Chiltons with 14K white gold nibs, but haven't seen this in a Wingflow nib.

H.
