Thought I would take a few shots of two nice pen/pencil sets I got in the mail today. I was really pleased to get both. The first is a really nice Parker 51 in Nassau Green. I had a Nassau Green pen, but this one is nicer, and now I have a pencil too. :P

Here is the coup de grace - one of my Grail pens - an Esterbrook Green Cracked Ice set. I have been trying to get one of these since I first laid eyes on it. :)

Wow-- both beautiful.

I must say, however, that you've got it reversed-- the Nassau set is the grail set, not the Esterbrook set. Oh wait-- that's me! :)

At any rate, congratulations!

My grails are pens in which aren't yet discovered, until I find them, and they happen to be one-of-a-kind specimens. I don't know if grail is the word to use, maybe prototype or or some other word.

A prototype is a model or example built to test a concept. The word comes from Latin - Protos, meaning "first" and type from typos meaning "pattern, impression, or mold"

To me it does sound like that's what you're after - things that very few people have seen, and didn't make it into production, meaning they are particularly interesting and rare. Though lacking in whatever quality the protoype models that *did* make it into production had!

I have a similar desire, I'd love to find the early test models of pens, but given I only really rummage around in junk shops and markets, I'm pretty unlikely to find anything so interesting ;)

How would you know that any pen you find is one of a kind.

Note, too, that neither one-of-a-kind nor new-to-you are sufficient to qualify as prototype.

Closer to topic...nice buck fifty Esterbrook. By chance did this come from Brian? Or did I miss a deal of the bay?

You now need the other two colors...

Yep, this set came from Brian and Lisa. They also have a yellow set, which I thought hard about getting as well, but it had a few problems, so I decided against it. Still may change my mind.

These things are pretty hard to find, I have had a search set up on eBay for them for years, and only a couple have popped up.

I handled the set in LA if I remember correctly. The pencil is the jewel of the pair, I've seen far fewer of them than the pens. They wouldn't split the set...

Wow! Two very nice sets. I'll admit my experience with Esties is severely limited, but that cracked ice piece is definitely the nicest Esterbrook I've ever seen. Thanks for posting this!

Green-that works.

Brando-care to comment on the pen or picture quality?

On topic-sadly there is no pencil.
