Hi Gang,

I am familiar with the name Aiken-Lambert for their fancy overlay pens and dip pens, but are their later pens any good? For example, something like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/231072652334

Thanks

Decidedly lower in quality, though their nibs can still be very nice. Lever is a simple stamped piece, working against a sprung J-bar rather than a proper toggled pressure bar as found in earlier ALC/Waterman pens. Overall construction econopen level, crimped-on clip etc.
Note that the spelling is "Aikin", not "Aiken".

I stand corrected on the spelling, David. This is the pen that brought my attention to the topic:

The misspelling is very common -- always good to search under both spellings! -- so you have plenty of company.

The Aikin combo that's up now is a little more interesting, can't remember the last one I've seen. Waterman combos are fairly uncommon and I gather Aikin combos can't be too common.

Hi Pearce,

Here's a chat at our wee FPB about an Aikin Combo... with a happy ending...

That combo looks to be made of similar material to the one I pointed out. Now that I see the price of the combo up right now, I'm wondering if the price of the one in my OP is high? Especially since that's my bid on it. Just wondering if I made an error in judgement. I got an Essex with 14k nib for $10 from the same seller, saw grey marble on this one and jumped quickly.

Hi,

$39? The nib is worth nearly that. Yours is the pen or Combo?

Lee,

I think at $40 your fine, retail I would think it would be $80-100 but it's not to say you couldn't win the same pen for $20 a month from now. I think as a steady rule if one can buy a good clean pen for half of that pen's approximate retail value then your doing well.

Pearce.

I forgot about that post all together, I guess I was full of food from Thanksgiving and not thinking straight! It is nice to know that when I think something is uncommon it actually is from time to time.

Thanks Pearce. I figured for the price, it looks pretty decent, and the nib looks slightly oblique. I won't be crushed if I don't win it though.
