In a while with this thread we will not be able to call Matador, Mercedes and The Tower underrated pen brands and we will start paying a lot more for them, but they do deserve as they are fantastic looking pens with superior quality.

Here is a Matador Standart, I believe the same model as Christof's but in another color scheme.

I think yours is a 811 (single cap band).
Mine is a 813 with double cap band, but same series.
Very nice. Currently I felt in love a little bit with Matadors...

Another Matador:

It's a Matador Standard 90, a prewar pen in a pretty strange color/material combination. Here's the pen:

15751294113_4686c2fe01_b.jpg

The pens barrel and cap are made of different material as it is known from later Express models. The cap seems discolored but still is reddish. The cap and barrel threads fits perfectly and the imprint is on the barrel (not on the cap as it can be seen on later pens), what makes me thinking that this combination could be original. But no proof for that so far.

But here is what's really special:

16185090869_166d5b146f_b.jpg

The pen is a push knob filler but the barrel is transparent! As far as I know, transparent ink sacs didn't exist in the 1930's...? So for what should a transparent barrel be good on this pen!?!

I am not convinced it is an original combination, as you suggest, although we know sometimes they assembled pens with different parts from others… the transparent sac could easily be installed later, Don’t you think ?

Since this topic has become more about Matador, I thought it would be good to add another underrated pen, Greif, manufactured in Goslar and after the war bought by Pelikan…

I found interesting that it was sold in the Graf Zeppelin... not one of the other Greif I have include this imprint.

Ariel
Of course I am not 100% convinced too. That's why I show the pen here, and to get some comments of more knowledgeable collectors as you are.
And yes, sorry for not having mentioned this, the clear sac has been installed by me. The pen came without sac to me.

ps: the Greif is quite cool. Seems to be a "Souvenir" from a trip with the LZ127, late 20's/early 30's. how does it fill?

Selector was the trademark for Bezembinder from Breda (Holland) during the 1930's. The company produced quality button-filler and piston-filler fountain pens.

Selector 80 - jade green, button filler, 13.5 cm, Netherlands, 1930's

This thread is on fire!!

Parcival, Luxor had really nice celluloids and touches of class in the rings they used.

Ariel, your pen Greif looks to be purchased on board of the Zeppelin. At least it did not went down in flames!

Yep you are correct, it was in fact the LZ129 that went down in flames. The Graf-Zeppelin was the L-127, according to this web page

Nevertheless is very cool the have a pen linked with the a Zeppelin flight machine. Very nice piece of History Ariel!!

Just to prove that even in those days marketers and sales managers would take advantage of having lots of people confined in a small space with no possibility to escape to  push-sell stuff, just like in the current days when we are bothered with perfumes, watches and other items being forcefully sold in planes...

Hello pen friends

Luxor had been mentioned here but it can`t be mentioned often enough: They made gorgeous fountain pens. Pic: some Luxors from my collection, in front two oversized models.

Kind Regards, Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I have those first pens but not in oversize. They are really well built, of great quality and stunning!

Here is something odd for me. I have several The Tower pens including some Extra. Recently I got a new one that is longer than the regular Extras I already had and that has a different and more luxury clip ring. I was not aware of this Extra variance till I found it.

Hello

There is nothing odd with different sizes of the same fountain pen series. . In the old times of hand craftes fountain pen making it had been no problem to make a barrel longer or shorter. Different seizes for different hands. And moer ornaments....as you liked it.

PS I found a pic with my other Luxors (right in front)

Kind Regards

Thomas
