There are lots of examples where white dots have been struck from pens.  The reverse could be true but, the addition of a white dot on a non white dot pen would be indistinguishable from the white dot being there in the first place.  Anyway, I don't believe there is any reason to believe the striking of the white dots was other than factory performed IMHO.

Hi Roger,

Concur regarding factory original.  "Why?"... remains.

I've seen these with the filled hole at 90 degrees to the clip, clearly( to me anyway) that example left the factory with the WD hole being filled ( my recollection is that it was not a model that may have had a clip added later but ??). The pattern matching at least when new makes me lean to a factory job on this pen.

While not a Sheaffer here's another example of things being filled, the blk/pearl ringtop on the right has had a clip hole filled, it clearly visible about half way down the cap. I'm not sure if factory or "aftermarket" but suspect the latter, regardless an old "repair", and not the pattern matching of David's pen either.

Hugh;

I don't think it was repair rather the need to finish up a particular order and not having all the stock to meet it so through in a couple of downscaled LT's.

Or, variation on a theme, you have just introduced a new style (clip, grip, and/or nib) and are using up your stock of old style.  When you get down to the dregs, the nibs imply non-lifetimes, but all you've got left of the old style are caps that were already drilled to be lifetimes.

I'd say less so a using up of parts with Sheaffer.  If that were the practice I don't think we'd see flattops with 1940's characteristics.  If you didn't need to finish up an order you'd just sell the pen for what it was rather than rework it into something else.

SNIP

Of note, I did pick up something interesting  just tonight on ebay..   I have hope the clip is just tarnished, which I suspect, and not brassed. Look at my newly bought Balance.

Link to the gray red Ebay  Balance with funny dot.

I had the pen shipped to my hospital, given the timing of the purchase.

It arrived today.

Oh, man, there is more to this that I expected/hoped.
