In my latest hunt I acquired a burgundy (Dubonnet) Wahl Eversharp.  A rather plain looking pen with a 14KT nib.  Bought it for a very modest price - I figured I'd scavange the nib if nothing else.  In doing my research, it looks just like a burgundy Gold Seal, except it doesn't have the gold seal on it.  The imprint is just WAHL Eversharp Made In USA.  Without the gold seal did this pen come under a different name?  These were pre-skylines, right?  Any information would be great!  I can post a picture if anyone wants to see it.

I believe I own a set of the pen I suspect you desribe. Finding it might be a problem now as it is in a period box buried somewhere, not in my Hamilton cabinet. If it is what I believe it to be, it is not a "non Gold Seal with a Gold Seal (accidentally, etc)" , but is a known pen found properly with Gold Seal, though i believe one not known to be in any Wahl catalogue. It is a bit of an odd duck. I will hunt the set, but perhaps you could offer an image. I would not be so quick to scavenge from it.

regards

David (and all), here are the images.  A rather plain looking pen, almost passed on it because it was so plain, but at $22 with a 14KT nib, I figured I could use the nib if nothing else.  Looks just like images I've seen of the Gold Medals but without the medal.

I did clean the nib up so you could see the detail, but otherwise unrestored - but won't be a long or hard restore.

OK. Now I know what you meant in first post. I'd read it as a pen having Gold Seal that you didn't expect to have that. You have the opposite. Info on these is scarce-to-nil iirc, but all I've seen are Gold Seal.

My advise is not to harvest anything from this. It is an interesting pen.

I'd like it just to match with my GS version.

I'll happily trade you a couple parts-Skylines or nibs for it, if a nib is what you seek.

David, thanks for the info - I may hang onto it for a bit if it is that interesting / rare - even if not super valuable.  Makes my second intersting Wahl, the other being my barber-poleish pattern one (the discussion we had on the round doric-like one I have that is a lever filler).  Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then.... lol.  If I wake up one day and want to trade for something you will be the first person I contact!

Rob Bader has the matching pencil, in black.

Also, Jonathan Veley shows 4 matching pencils here, last photo on his Eversharp page: http://www.jonathanv...ls/p1010401.jpg
3 with gold seals, 1 without, but doesn't have a model name.

David, can you move this hard to find thread to the Wahl-Waterman-Conklin forum?

I finished the restore on this pen and it turned out very beautiful - simple but elegant.  Haven't inked it to write but guessing it will be nice.

The nib on this pen is what I refer to as the "second banner style" that also appeared on Skylines.  Being the second style, that would seem to place the nib in the mid-1940s, so if the nib is original to this pen, that would date the pen as well in that timeframe.

Am I correct in this assessment, or did this style nib actually appear on non-Skyline pens in some earlier era?

Hi John, certainly no expert on that subject... I certainly didn't change the nib. I'll leave this one to the experts!  Not even sure when the gold seals came out without re-researching.  But thanks for posting!
