Went for my first antique shop crawl in a couple months last Saturday.  My first stop was at a recently opened place that I hadn't been to before.  There were about a dozen pens lined up in a display case, and a blue Esterbrook LJ and an orange Sheaffer of some sort both grabbed my eye.

The orange Sheaffer was in great shape; clearly whoever O. W. Haney was didn't use it much.  Then I looked at the bottom of the pen... "R3-25C Semi Fine $3.00".  Yep, stickered!

As if that wasn't thrilling enough, I walked out with both pens for under 30 bucks.

Dandy way to finish the year!  Now I guess I should take a picture or two...

Tim

Someone started a mini-collection thread. Do post the photos there even if it isn't so mini.

As to the OP, you must have over paid for the Esties...

OK then.

Orange Sheaffers. Perhaps the World's Most Comprehensive Collection.

All in the large cluster at the right are off-catalogue.

The Estie did set me back nearly four dollars, so there was a moment of internal conflict.  If I'd had two or three more dollars cash in my wallet (which would have been enough to pick up the Sheaffer) I would have had to pass on the Estie.  But I couldn't very well pass on the Sheaffer... which meant the debit card came out.  I didn't have authorization from the CFO (the lovely mother of my five kids), so I fugured another four bucks wouldn't really get me in any additional trouble.  Besides, it was blue.

Okay let's tally:

David I= 13 pens

Roger W = 15 pens

I would have to say Roger wins, as we all know pencils ( with deference to Joe & Jon) don't count :P

Nope.  ;)

Roger has dups showing, based on trim/size. He included 3-25s and 46 Specials otherwise identical, possibly straight dups too (multiple of same pen), as there appear to be four ring top medium girth pens there.

My photo was based on different size/trim configurations. If i toss in 46 Specials (three variants) identical to the 3-25's  in size/trim or toss in 8 standard size long pens just because I have 'em...

Roger probably can clarify which of the pens showing are duplicates.

Yeah, pencils are an afterthought.

But David, I'm talking Quantity not Quality.

But David, I'm talking Quantity not Quality.

Hey, I'm all for anyone  talking about whatever he wants to talk about ;)

But, as you know, one of life's greatest joys for most people is to engage in semantic nitpicking.  Right?  You mean, it isn't for everyone? Shocked! Shocked I am to consider that.

Anyhoo... my job is to lend order to chaos, to preserve the meaning of words.

Roger and I discussed the World's Most Comprehensive Orange Plastic Sheaffer Collection.  Not the World's Largest Quantity of...

Now, as I noted, I could probably double the quantity shown in my pic, if quantity mattered, but no, the chat wasn't about quantity or quality, it was about comprehensiveness, not that tangents are  eschewed.

Comprehensive:   complete; including all or nearly all elements or aspects of something: a comprehensive list of sources.  Of large  scope; wide-ranging: a comprehensive collection of photographs.

The mathmetical notion of comprehensive, a set containing nearly all elements or  aspects of something, does  not require many  items in that set, though often many items are present. But, a set having many items in it need not be comprehensive.

A basket with 100 apples, each of a different type, offers a  rather comprehensive selection. A basket with 200 of the same type apple will offer greater quantity but will not be at all comprehensive.

Who said pedantry can't be fun ;)

Still, tough crowd out there today.

I like David's argument, and his analogy, but now I want to see Venn diagrams accompanying the rhetoric!
