A quick look at the 'about us' area is enough to put me off. It tells me nothing about who is behind this venture, but it does state that they will automatically apply a 22% tax on all European Union customers!

Even ebay do not apply this

Actually that 22% is the VAT (in Italy), it should not be due in the case of a transaction between private individuals, while it has to be paid in the case of the seller being an enterprise (don't know if this is the correct term, sorry). And this is valid also if the buyer is outside Italy.

P.S. I'm not an affiliate, just an Italian with some experience with VAT, therefore I have nothing to say about the site.

Hi Paul,

I think that the VAT only apply to the 3% fee paid by sellers to the site, so as it is not something which concern the buyers. This is compulsory by EU regulation, and it is certainly applied also from ebay (although, since ebay is located in Luxembourg, the VAT is probably less).

Moreover this should apply only to EU sellers, so as sellers outside EU will not pay the VAT on the fee.

For example if a EU seller sell a pen for 100E, then

  • The buyer pay 100E. + shipping cost (if they are due)
  • The seller pay (3 +0.22*3)E. as fee

if a US seller sell a pen for 100E, then

  • The buyer pay 100E. + shipping cost (if they are due)
  • The seller pay 3E. as fee

This is what I've understood from the site and my knowledge of the EU regulations.

Alfredo

P.S. I'm not affiliate with PMauction.

You understand bad. 22% is applied only on the sold items fees. Sold item fees is 3%

How many buyers is one putting the auction in front of relative to eBay's audience.

Presumably fewer. But, everything starts somewhere. ;)

I would like to see a pen-oriented auction site that caters to serious buyers and sellers, so I wish the this new place well.

Whether it can stand in the face of Ebay's "beelions of customers", time will tell...

regards

david

we do not want to compete directly with ebay. We want make a pens and watches oriented.

David if you want a pen oriented site, PMAUCTION is the answer. Maybe it's a young site but after one day run well.

Hi,

I've taken a look and see that it follows the same layout as martiniauctions, which is a bit dissapointing as I believe that interface is confusing. Some items are displayed first, but then, if you scroll down find a list of other items. What are those items featured first? highlighted items? randomly selected items?

Best regards

Yup, I find the interface very difficult to use. It is hard to see all the auctions ending soon. And despite doing a search saying "open auctions only" I still end up with tons of closed auctions cluttering things up. :\

I like the idea of an eBay alternative, but the interface is just not helping.

(That and auctions longer than 9 days annoy me incredibly. That's so glacial it isn't even interesting to me.)

I don't know when you keept and eye on www.pmauction.net but serching work fine and results of open auctions only are not polluted from tons of closed auctions. Maybe you try to work on website in a moment of maintenance (as ebay all friday pmauction go to manteinance mode for some hours).

Auction longer than 9 days is a seller choice. Also ebay allow it.

I wish this site all the success in the world, this is an example of the more the merrier, but I am just wondering what this site has to offer to both buyers and seller that can be viewed as a competitive advantage when compared with ebay or the Pen forums..... and so far I don´t see any clear advantage.

In my analysis :

- price - Lower that ebay but higher than any pen forum

- Safety - a lot lower than Ebay and the same when compared to all the pen dedicated forums

- Exposition - extremely reduced when compared to Ebay and lot lower than any of the pen forums.

Why should I has a seller sell there and as a buyer buy there?

Well I can see advantages for the buyers as reduced exposition of the website will decrease competition and therefore drive the prices lower. But that will make the sellers to define reserve prices and increase initial price and therefore reduce sales a lot and keep buyers off and that can be a vicious cycle hard to break...

Volume and exposition is key and I hope you can grow a lot as with those prices I don't feel abused like many times in Ebay. It can be interesting venue if you achieve a large audience, gain muscle and add safety for both sellers and buyers you can be on the right track, but your main competitor will be the forums not Ebay in my view.

Hope you succeed.

All the best

Best regards
Vasco
