I have mentioned several times that I really like the Waterman 94 pens - and, in fact, I have a pretty nice mini-collection of them.  So recently I was intrigued when this pen came up for auction on eBay.  It is a Gold Bond pen, pretty obviously made by L.E. Waterman for Monkey Ward, and is very much like the Waterman 94 in size and other design elements.  It has the stepped top on the cap, the lever is essentially the same, and it even has a Gold Bond keyhole nib!  Never mind that the 94's didn't generally have a keyhole nib.  In any case, it is associated with Waterman. The section is shaped like a Waterman, and the feed looks like the typical Waterman spoon feed.

I was happy to win the auction and acquire this pen, which I thought might somehow accompany my 94's in a harmonious manner.  Of course, the color is unlike any 94 - so that's also a plus.  Receiving the pen today, I was very impressed with the quality.

This is my first Gold Bond pen, and I am grateful to David I. for tuning me into them in his articles in recent Pennants.  Although David mentioned that Waterman did provide some of the Gold Bond pens for the Monkey Ward, I don't believe he showed any examples of them in his articles.  Anyway, I thought some of you would like to see this pen.  I also am including a picture which compares it to a Waterman 94 in Blue and Creme.

The GB-by-Waterman was to have been Part 3 or 4 of the GB series, though that might crop up elsewhere.

It seems I have created a monster.  I was underbidder on that one. Nice pen.  I have a nice range of other GB-Waterman pens lying about.

Frankly, I don't care which of the 1% gets the pen, as long as you share photos with us! :) Congrats, Allan, that is a beautiful pen. TBH, I prefer it to the blue Waterman.

That's a great pen Allan!

I forgot to bid and even if I had of remembered I think I would have been outbid on this one. David grabbed the other one last week in grey marble, I was the underbidder on that one!

I will echo what was previously said above, if I can't win the pen at least I get the chance to see some great pictures of it.

Pearce.

Thanks for the compliments on the pictures, guys.  I am still refining my picture taking ability.  Somehow, I got a little too much yellow in one of the shots above.  Lighting mistakes really show up.

Pearce, I just bought an interesting Conklin Symetric from you on ebay.  I don't remember seeing that color before.

That's why I never told anyone what I was doing years ago when I was collecting Gold Bond Watermans and Dorics and Diamond Medal and Webster Parkers . . . .

Allan, it was actually very common for #4-size Watermans of that era (later 1930s) to have keyhole nibs.

Actually, I realized after I said that that it was likely wrong.  Certainly, they were making 94's at the same time they were producing keyhole nibs, so it would be natural to put them on the pens.  However, I didn't recall seeing any on my pens.

So just for heck of it, I got out my pens to check them.  I have 20 of the 94's (one is a 494).  I did find 3 keyhole nibs - oddly enough all three were in grey pearl pens.  These are the ones many call "steel quartz".  I had thought they were probably replacement nibs, but probably not. BTW, I just purchased a "real"  steel quartz 92 on ebay, but haven't received it yet.

Yeah, I wrestled with that approach when I started the article series, but in this particular case I favored the joy of doing the articles over the risk of losing (or paying more for) the occasional pen.  Life is short...
