I hadn't even heard of this model until recently when one appeared on Trademe, it closed without a single bid at a start of NZ$38 and was then relisted at NZ$15, this time it went for NZ$88.50.  The psychology of auctions is beyond my ken.

Anyway I have been driving around the South Island this week while ostensibly attending a conference in Dunedin.  I have lost track of the antique shops and secondhand stores I have tried, all to no avail.  Finally today, on my last day, I dropped into an antique shop in Christchurch and found this set, again a 77.  It still has the original sac and Duro 58 nib. It's quite a large pen, very similar to the 58 but I think slightly longer at  c13.5cm.  I look forward to cleaning it up and adding it to my collection.

Lovely set, looks to be in great original condition. Is that ink staining on the barrel threads? Otherwise it looks virtually unused. The 77 was the largest of the pens available in herringbone, but often available now a little cheaper than the equivalent 58 because it is not so well known. I suppose it came at a bargain price as well!

Hi Andy yes that is just ink, I don't think it has been much used at all.  Not exactly a bargain at NZ$100 but I guess a fair price?

Corresponds to just over £50 in the UK, which is a great price, it is probably worth at least twice that or a bit more when restored. Lots of CS bargains still to be found in NZ, it appears!

Thanks Andy for that information.  I've finished restoring it and it's certainly in mint condition.

There are a steady number of CS pens on Trademe, three or four a week at least.

Final photos: The box has 9. sticker on the gold lower surface, Jonathan Donahaye's key has it as 9a
