I just took a pen off Ebay that is advertised as a Waterman 7, keyhole nib, correct furniture, and a very iffy "7" imprinted at the end of the barrel. It has a purple nib.

But it has no color band at the top.

I have two 7's now, a black celluloid and an emerald-ray. The black has a disk, and the ray has nothing (both red nibs). Is it possible this ripple is a late make at the time of the ray celluloid and they didn't do the color band on them?

From the pictures, it doesn't look like there was ever one before.

The last pens that MT seemed to advertise were the "Eternal" pens, and then the company put out a wide range of different styles, shapes, sizes and filling systems before eventually closing up shop. I invite you to post your pictures of your American pens

No, it is just a cap from a 55.  They fit perfectly. Of course, if it really isn't a 7 on the barrel end, it could be something else.  However, you see #7 barrels with 55 caps pretty often.

Alan,

Is this the right clip for a 55?

Yep, that looks exactly like a 55 ripple cap.   Clip is correct for both 55 and 7 ripple.  The older 55's have a slightly wider clip, but other than that they are the same.  Actually the ripples - #7, 52, 54, 55, 56 can have either narrow or wide clips.  Probably #5 and 58 too, but I haven't seen enough to know.

The #7 pen was essentially a 55, with a modified cap top and color coded nib.
