I'm quite interested in this ringtop but when I look on Parkerpens the #48 in both long and short models is described as being 14k not 14 GF.

Does the pen look correct and is the asking price fair?

Any info appreciated.

The model 48 and 49 were gold filled overlays, not 14K. If Tony has it as 14K, that would be incorrect.

For price, it's not a terrible price if the overlay is truly pristine with no dings or brassing. The nib is a replacement however.

Another one, much more expensive, with a heart-whole #2 LC nib.

Not momentary interested in #48, but I'd buy it.

I have pretty much the same pen except it is unmarked with reference to a number on the blind cap as the blind cap is overlayed and knurled.  The material is  beautiful vertical  bar and line pattern,  The pattern is seen in the Fischler & Schneider book 1st edition pg 111 upper rignt center picture pen on left.   I think you have seen the pen.  Anyway I have owned it for more than 20 years and bought if in Frank Dubiels back yard in Fall River MA.  He too looked at it.  My point is it has the same nib as you are calling a replacement EXCEPT it is not marked with a 2.  If it was replaced what was the original a Lazy S?  I think too that the addition of a clip on a ring top is not always legit either.  I have looked at many a book and ads and have not seen a Jack Knife with a ring top and clip.  I know that this absence does not a fact make but I am always suspicious when I see one.

Thoughts?

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Photos would be good if you can post some at some point. The lined pattern you describe would have been a model 49, but without the overlay on the blind cap. At some point in the late teens, the model 98 and 99 showed up, which had the rope-like raised area on the washer clip / blind cap piece in the cap but otherwise had overlays very much like the 48 or 49. The 98 and 99 stay in the catalog into the '20s, joined by longer versions numbered as models 90 (lined) and 91 (plain) and the 48 and 49 have gone away. All of the 90 series seem to have overlaid blind caps.

What does it all mean? At the point the self-fillers with washer ball clips come along, the model 48 and 49 kind of morphs and the 90 series shows up, and the features start to comingle. So I'm thinking your pen is more likely a model 90 series instead of a 49.

Back to the nib imprint. The imprint on the OP's ebay pen doesn't show up until late '20s at the earliest, after all of the models I noted above were out of the product line. If original, I would expect an imprint more like this:

As to the clip, in the era that these pens were made, the clip was an extra fee. The catalog states even on the pages with the 90 models (ringtops) that a GF clip was available for 75 cents extra. So I think the ringtop pens with GF clips could very well be original.
