i like dunn pens and have a few (both the old and the new), but i have no idea why this silver dunn pen--missing the pump handle and with a less than perfect barrel--fetched $670 in a just-concluded auction on ebay, with about four or five bidders at play:

your thoughts, please?

silver (and for that matter gold filled) dunns are rare. I remember seeing one many years ago at a pen show, the late Tom Threfell had it. great pen.

I don't think the price is out of line, I don't collect dunns, but certainly you have to appreciate the order of supply and demand

Yeah… I'd say Rick is on point with supply and demand. I've talked to a few Dunn collectors that wouldn't have a problem dipping into their retirement for a pen. This was someone's Grail.. no doubt.

Compared to a typical Waterman 52 probably averages around $50-60 and a silver 452 roughly $200-300 versus typical Dunn $100-160 and this silver $650… maybe a little higher than I would have guessed, but seems about right to me.

Cool pen.

You might not see another in the next 15 years.  You can assemble a wide Dunn collection pretty affordably.  But if you need a super Dreadnaught or a gold or silver to complete the collection be prepared to venture into this price neighborhood.

I love this spread.

Probably the hardest piece to obtain is the gold ring top pencil.

Excellent.  Solid Gold lurks. I'd pay well for one of those.

This ad had the color in it (besides the text highlights) already?

regards

I added a couple images to the gallery. I'm on my iPad and can't copy the BBC code. The ad was in Collier's Illustrated Weekly.

David,

December 10, 1921.  I think it was the back cover.

In color.
