Scarce variant. I'd seen the ad but had concern for the very top of the pen. Blow up the image that shows the cap top.

It's a gamble I can take. The cap lip looks great and the nib, well, I am a sucker for stubs…

Look at this sellers sold history. He moves some nice stuff, for a great price if you catch it when he lists.

Hi,
It's good that seller sells nice stuff. And, of course, any of us can miss things. The price was bargain for black-and-pearl Balance Autograph (solid gold trim) if decent shape. I note only that I would have bought it much earlier save that the following gave me pause. My concern might not turn out to be accurate, but here it is...
Even if there is some trouble at the top, it is possible to have liquid celluloid applied, sometimes pushed into splits if present. And, the pen is somewhat scarce.

And, if nib is true stub, it alone is worth more than the cost of the sale price

I'm sure many saw the listing, it been on for at least 5 hours. I just happened to be seeking clean pearl. I did see top, but I've dealt with this before and if it turns out to be deteriorating then we'll go from there.
Like I said, I like clean pearl. That is what I based my purchase on. I'll bring it to Ohio, we can examine there.

I look forward to sharing some fountain pen show and tell there. I'll bring some interesting items too.

I got a superb consignment OS black and pearl balance
it has a hairline in the cap lip, and worn trim
otherwise, the color is choice.

Update:
Cap is fine and indeed is a true stub nib. Unfortunately the barrel's threads, shattered to pieces and were glued back together. So sad, but if I can source a clean barrel one day it'll go into my personal stash. Maybe I can find donor threads in the meantime.
