Great photo.  Yes, the ambering seen on pens of this sort is in what presumably is clear celluloid superficial to and perhaps deep to the chips.  Sheaffer invested in interesting Celluloid. If you look closely at the sub-brand Lahn pattern and "snake-skin" Celluloids, the multi-layered elements are apparent.

Notice the clouds relative to the scales. Notice the scales at oblique to camera line.

very interesting topic!

I have no funny Sheaffer's but to me, it is a big mystery how these patterns have been manufactured:

Thanks for the pictures Brian! Fantastic and the seam is clearly visible after you highlighted it

It´s a pity modern pen makers don't  make this good looking paterns in theyr modern plastics. Probably this is too labor and time consuming to produce  and therefore expensive for modern times...

David, The WASP  base celluloid is very similar to what Soennecken used in this side of the pond, the detail in the pictures in great!

You will like then the pic I hope to post tonight. I get on plane in Milwaukee heading home from J-ville with 550 pens in carry-on gear (a record?), shlepped with me to and from the Ohio Show.   Picked up some choice stuff, including  nice Vacuum snake-skin pattern.
