Today I received a pen I recently bought. It turns out it´s a lot bigger and fatter than I was expecting :). it´s has a considerable size indeed!!

What do I have here? A safety 14 or a safety 44, or something else?

I would also like to know the production period.

Pen's dimensions

  • Big size nib marked 4
  • Caped length over 5" 1/2 or 14cm
  • Cap posted length is over 6" 1/4 or 16cm
  • Barrel diameter is 14mm
  • Cap diameter is 15mm
  • Engraved in the cap is: Waterman's Pat. April 26 ( not sure of the 6) 1903
  • Engrave in Barrel is:

                                       Pat'd1884  May 13. 1899

                                   Waterman's  Ideal Fountain pen-

                                            Pen N.Y.   Aug 4 1903

                                                  Safety pen

Here are some pictures with a Pelikan 500NN and some Waterman 0522 and 0512  near by to give a notion of size.

Thanks in advance

I don't have any documentation for these pens, but one does run across Waterman safeties that are the size of a 45, but carry a #4 nib and are marked "44" on the end. The ones I've seen all came from Europe -- a Ripple example can be seen here: http://www.vintagepe...n_1.shtml#11585

Thanks David!

I have checked thye end of the pen and unfortunatelly it does not have any visible marking ( 44)

Would this #4 nibs be bigger than regular #4 nibs? I´ve never had a #4 Nib before, but this is at least as big and a #7 Key hole nib I have.

Best regards
