Elegant!

Are all Autograph made with 14Kt solid Clips and cap bands?

Hi Vasco,

While the Autograph term was not used throughout all Sheaffer history, and while by 1951 or some pens with gold cap-band but gold-filled clip were called Signature, collectors tend to use Autograph for the solid gold capband pens from1 1930s-1940s even though Sheaffer did not use the term the entire time.

All Autograph Sheaffer Balances have solid gold cap-bands. The 1938 catalog lists on the Deluxe Autograph page the model  Viceroy, with solid gold cap-band but gold-filled clip.  So, not all Balance Autograph pens have to have solid gold clip, but yes still solid gold band.

Early Balances with solid gold trim were not called Autograph by Sheaffer iirc, but collectors still do. It's just that the name started use by Sheaffer a few years after the pens first appeared.

Flat-tops before Balance with solid gold also were not called Autograph by Sheaffer, but collectors often do.

World War II Triumph pens that collectors call Autograph (maybe Sheaffer did too. I must check)  had gold band but gold-filled (or vermeil, gold-on-silver) clips.

1951 Thin Model Touchdown used "Signature" for gold-filled clip with solid gold band, and "Autograph" for solid gold clip and band.

Thanks David! I was under the impression Autograph were all the "engravable" large cap bands.

I have this Balance Oversize with a large cap band that has an engraving space, how would would this variant be called?

Not shown in Sheaffer catalogues, though I have a somewhat special catalogue this tweak on the oversized Premier (assuming your pen is oversize) would be the Premier Deluxe.  "Jeweler's" style (factory original) cap-band.

My old mag article I need to adjust for internet, but here is bulk of it, without photo captions though. Jeweler's style cap-bands are midway down.

By the way, if that is the oversized pen and it is clean (good trim, etc), I'd be interested to buy/trade. I have many of that sort, but still seek one in that color for my collection.

That is love, very nice love!

A customer of mine picked up a similar set with 14k trim recently; see photos below. Not to the caliber of your high powered collections, but I like the set and it is clean too. He decided to sell it to me as he needed money for holiday gifts for his wife, so I am having the plunger restored.

Hi Greg,

That one is interesting for a different reason.  The cap-band on your pen is normal for a 1945-7 Sheaffer Triumph-family Autograph.  The Black Balance shown earlier is a whole different critter, normally shown with a thinner cap-band.

But, the 1945-7 Autograph such as yours typically is seen only in black.  Brown-stripe variants are scarce. So for your pen the color rather than the cap-band size is what's funky.  I have a few of them, but don't mind adding. Maybe we can trade or deal at the LA show soon. Or, for reasonable price before ;)

Dear David,

Thanks for your reply, and excellent/expert information! So, would one say that this trim assortment/arrangement is a special order?

Lets talk and maybe, as "Bill Cullen" would say "Lets Make A Deal...."

Hi Greg,

On yours, the trim and original price of the pen is standard. Finding it in brown is most uncommon. IIRC the retrospective in the 1947 Sheaffer workbook does suggest these were offered and does not suggest special-order setting, but how the pens were offered at time of sale can be a bit fuzzy.

Thank you David. Excellent article!

Mine is indeed a Oversize and is very clean with excellent trims. Overall I would rate  it as  near mint.

Very nice :)

The chrome trim often is a weak point on Sheaffers of this color, as it gets pitting and wear which cannot be polished to original look. The other colors have gold-filled trim, which is good for polishing.

I have all colors in striped plastic with your special cap-band except your color (Gray Pearl) and Rose Glow.  I believe I have spares in Marine Green and maybe Brown.  Interest in trade?

regards
