An older pen experiences shrinkage in the cap; the threads bind a bit, it may even have a bit of trouble slipping on/off, and the band(s) may have become loose.

Is that really the end of the story, or are there any tips or tricks for resizing it back (closer?) to it's original dimension?

Aha. This precise example would be a Moore in a striated plastic. I have no way of knowing if it is Casein based or not. Also, if it swelled, wouldn't it swell inward as well as outward, thereby making the tight fit on the barrel even tighter (while possibly reducing the looseness of the band)?

Striped Moore should be Celliuloid. Cap-bands can be swaged (Ron Zorn and others do tha work), I suppose a bit of polish on the threads then some aggressive open/close could give a little give, but that is risky.

Or, find another cap in time

I did think about getting the swaging done. The thing is, this is a 2nd example of a pen of which I have a better item. I was just wondering if there was a way to restore to make it a little more attractive for someone else to own it. I'll probably just point out the issues and leave it at that. Otherwise, a nice Moore for someone.

To be honest, that was what was in my head. I just didn't know if it would stay 'expanded' once all was done. Thanks, Rick, still mulling all this over, but it is great to have a resource like FPB, with a lot of deep pen people.

I was sort of pulling your leg.  The casien + water trick generally results in swelling followed by destruction.  But seeing a casien object puff up is reather neat.

The best option in my experience is to make make a mandrel with the correct thread just slightly larger than the inner cap diameter and then with a hair-drier heat the cap and start screwing the mandrel gently ( the mandrel it self has a very slight taper shape) Several heat followed by screwing in an out  are needed

Instead of a custom made andrel if you have more barrels from a similar pen but just a tad larger you can use them also. It´s never 100% perfect ( In my experience) but it works quit good.

Just be careful with the heat, to  much and you have a ruined cap...

Best regards
