From the "Elements of Collecting" file. The top 6 colors of Sheaffer's 1950s Snorkels do tend to sell well above the price of lesser colors. This one- I assert- pulled close to double what retailers would sell restored sets with warranties. Anyone care to analyze the glitch? Points to the heart of Snorkel collecting and of the impact of "just enough info to get yerself in trooble".

Yep. It is vermilion. Still a good pen, but all-Vermilion turns up. A true all-Fiesta (with matching not metal cap) is a grail pen. Not clear the bidders knew that all-Fiesta is a monster and were simply bidding on a wrongly described pen or if it was just a hot round of bidding in ignorance of that issue.

I know the open nib was shown on 1 pic and no WD have open nibs I still found it suspicious that a full view of the pocket clip was not shown on any of the pics.

Nibs can be swapped. But the clip and cap-band are the tells.

I saw one of these change hands in DC for less but the buyer was fairly happy with his purchase. He and another well known dealer had a chat about how these sets are fairly uncommon and the price he gave interestingly enough was basically what this set on eBay sold for. I guess this they both had a good handle on what these sets are worth, I had thought they were a $300-400 set tops.

Maybe I've been selling my uncommon colors for too little...

Conventional wisdom is that perhaps 4 or so are known to the hobby. I've owned two of them and still own one.  The grail Snork.

The picture shows the red plastic cap.  The full narrative description says polished stainless steel cap.  What is it??
