This morning I collected a beautiful (if you like ugly pens) Mentmore 46, sterling silver cap, in new condition, with box and guarantee slip.  Of interest to me was that the instructions show a lever-filling version.  I had thought they were all button fillers.

I have a suspicion that the guarantee paper is a generic Mentmore item overprinted at the top with the model details.

I thought that too, initially, but the lever filler in the picture has the 46's distinctive section.  Interesting.

All I can say is that I've handled a lot of these pens and I've never seen a lever filler. It would be interesting to find one!

I suppose the 46s are considered ugly because of unfamiliarity. There are many other pens that we accept now because we've become accustomed to seeing them. The 46 is an exceptionally well-made pen and those that I've had have written very well.

I agree Deb they are great pens.  I'm using my other, beat-up one at work every day.

I have been searching on the Web since I saw this post with no luck. Lots of button fillers but not 1 lever. They seem rarer than the all Fiesta red Snorkel.

I also would not call this pen ugly. I find it quite interesting. This pen is strongly influenced by the Parker "51" (sterling silver slip cap, clutch ring, covered nib...).

And it's missing on my chart of Parker "51" inspired pen design:

When did the Mentmore 46 came out?

C.

PS: I know, there are lots of others missing too. I am working on these...

I think it came out in the late forties but others such as Deb are better qualified to answer that question.

I'm delighted to see people springing to the 46's defence as a result of my ill-chosen adjective, but I am not feeling well disposed towards mine at the moment as it just came uncapped in my shirt pocket and I now have a Rorschach blot on my chest in Diamine Green-Black.

So this topic sent me downstairs to look at my 46's and they are all button fillers. Although I had never noticed before the slightly different shapes, lengths and cap lengths.

I should move them up on photographing schedule and get some pictures up.

The 46 was introduced in '46.
