Thanks to a fellow pencil collector, I now have a mini collection of the three post war Sheaffer utility pencil models.  Bottom, the $1.50 Cadet with chrome trim; middle, the $2.50 Sovereign/Admiral/Craftsman; top, the $3.00 Statesman.  These were made for only about a year or two, 1945-46, so I doubt I'll ever find all the colors for each model.  The barrels are longer than a regular pencil and the caps are open-ended like a "working togs" or pearly utility.  The clip on the Statesman is Sheaffer-less, same as the Statesman-and-higher-priced pens/pencils, but is solid, not spring-mounted.

(edit, 3/30, better picture)

Forgot to include the Sept 28, 1945, LIFE ad that shows the $1.50 Cadet utility (upper right, in black)

Are these actually cheaper than non-utility pens that matched the bead band pen models suggested? Or were there not non-utility pencils of that sort?

Nice collection, btw :)

regards

Yes, cheaper.  Cadet, Craftsman/Admiral/Sovereign, and Statesman utility pencils were $1.50, $2.50, and $3.00.  The regular pointy-ended pencils were $2.50, $3.00, and $4.00, respectively.

Utility pencils have solid mounted clips, while regular pencils, $3.00 and higher, have spring loaded clips (grey is a fuzzy area - you can find grey $2 regular bead band pencils with either solid or spring loaded clips; the price code is on the cap).

The stripey utility pencils were only made for about a year and show up about as often as a Masterpiece.

See pages 22-26 of the Spring 2006 Pennant.
