Sheaffer Balance set with off-catalogue "jeweler's" (factory original) cap-band, mint with price stickers (a powerful tool in the study of the special cap-band pens). This is a bit special, and is a nice find in the context of the one hour seminar  Pat Mohan and I gave on these special pens last week at the Raleigh Pen Show (I'll have the video online soon).

This set shows part of the charm of our little facebook fountain pens group, as the set popped up as a find from one of our members, and I was lucky enough to be able to make first offer on it. If you read my 2012 article, you likely have some familiarity with this one. Note the pen has features of both 2nd *and* 3rd tier Sheaffer Balances (radius clip without White Dot suggests 2nd tier, #3 nib suggests third tier) and, go figure, the price is in between 2nd and 3rd tier pens. Bonus for those of you who can cite the model name (if you read the article...).

Sorry it's been a while since I read the article.  Are these special model numbers, or do they correspond with other pen model numbers?

For Marine green:

Craftsman pen = E3W (3 or 33 nib) for Vac-fil or E3T for lever fill

Craftsman pencil = ETAC (no cap band)

Statesman, Sovereign, Admiral pencil = ETC

So the factory codes are entirely consistent.

Save for "X" marking the spot.

The 'spot' indicated by the "X" would be representative of the cap band in your estimation?

Will you be fixing the elastic in the case?

I have bunch of cases needing repair.  Need to track the stretchy cord and a curved surgical suture needle

(...) the one hour seminar  Pat Mohan and I gave on these special pens last week at the Raleigh Pen Show (I'll have the video online soon).

Watched the video. Thank you. Now I have to find your jeweller's band pens pictures and watch it again to see what were you guys talking about :-) It's a shame I can't afford ordering the magazine with your article where I guess I might see the page from that catalogue with Sheaffer's models of this special kind. It's good to know there is still plenty of evidence on paper waiting to be uncovered. One just have to think a bit out of the box and cast the net wider. Or just know the people that know what's your cup of tea. Congrats on obtaining these catalogs!

Bonus for those of you who can cite the model name (if you read the article...).

You did realize that you posted a photo of the pen with the sticker stating the model name, right? xD Or the photo originally was a different one and not showing the sticker?

All the best,

Maciek

I probably should run a couple black and white copies of the article.  I'm frightened. I don't remember having the green pen. I have a brown set. Now I need to find that green set.
