HisNibs.com update -- A really slow boat from China...
July 30th, 2016

Greetings all,

NOTE: I just received the new issue of Pen World (August 2016), and there's a terrific article by Barry Gabay entitled 'From East to West'. It's a beginning profile of Chinese pens and those pictured are from my personal collection. If you're not a subscriber yet to Pen World, please go to www.penworld.com and rectify the situation! :-)

Decisions, decisions. Which donut? Which pen?

I must thank you all for the great patience you've shown in awaiting the re-stocking of so many Chinese pen models. I won't go into all of the gory details about why it took so long, let's just be happy that they're starting to arrive!

As in the past, there are too many models coming in to point them out individually, so again I'm linking them on the homepage http://www.hisnibs.com/ near the top, with a 'back in stock! ' label. These are the first, and there are more coming.

I'll list a few of the many models that have returned, in this newsletter, but again -- just going to the homepage http://www.hisnibs.com/ is the easiest way to see what's available -- and I'll be updating you with more in short order.

I've posted a short Facebook Live video (with the Pen World magazine flipped vertically!), about the arrival of some of the Chinese pens. Just go to https://www.facebook.com/HisNibs1/

As this newsletter goes out to a mailing list of thousands of customers, please understand if there's a delay in answering your email queries or orders after one of these is sent. We will respond in order received and as soon as possible!

Jinhao Starry Night

"Hi Norman. Oh, these are just beautiful... I have a few nose-bleedingly expensive Japanese raden pens and I've become reluctant to use one of them because the lacquer's pitting. This Jinhao has all the bling and fascination of raden without my having to worry about damaging them in daily use. The nibs are wonderful and the whole pen feels well made and satisfyingly robust. You really can't beat Chinese pens. They never cease to amaze me. Thanks!"
K.T., United Kingdom

"Just a quick note to say THANK YOU for a perfect order, and such speedy service! I am very much impressed with the Jinhao Starry Nights fountain pen! It is quite lovely, and much more solid and well-made than I expected for the price. Thank you too for swapping in the black Monteverde nib - this is a terrific pen that I will enjoy every day!"
S. J., Bothell, WA

"Hi Norman. Just got back in town from Portland for St. Patrick's Day. Picked up my mail and my Jinhao Starry Nights had arrived in good order. Rinsed it out in soapy water, rinsed again in plain, and then inked it. What a fantastic writer! I don't know if you had time to check the nib, but it was perfect. And, while your photography was about state-of-the-art for this pen, it was SO much better in person. Especially when I had it out in the sunlight. This pen is going up into my EDC list, for sure. Appreciate your fast shipping and customer service. This is the first time I've purchased from you (I'm fairly new to fountain pens) but I'll be checking your site and blog regularly. Mark me down as a satisfied customer! Thanks so much again."
D. P., La Grande, OR

Hero Victorian

HeroVictorianCapCloseup_small.jpg

"Received the order of the Hero Victorian and the Private Reserve Black Velvet. My only regret is that I did not order two Victorians. The pen compares quite favorably with those costing three times as much, the Waterman Charleston for instance, and the near extra-fine nib is quite delightful for a modified Copperplate script style. The heft of the pen is remarkable for its size and fits my stubby fingers quite nicely. The flow of the Private Reserve black Velvet is superb, having Calligraphy ink quality. I am very satisfied with the order and hope to make further purchases."
J. C., Columbia, S.C.

"I just received the Hero Victorian, and was surprised at how lightweight it felt, considering its all metal construction. It writes beautifully, and is very comfortable to hold."
E. A., Springfield, IL

"Hi Norman, Just wanted to let you know that the Hero Victorian arrived this afternoon and I have been using it quite happily for several hours. The nib is nice and smooth. I primed the converter with a little water with dish detergent, just to make sure there would be no sticking of ink to the sides. Don't know if the converter needed it, but I did it anyway as a preventative. (I wish I had as much luck getting my more expensive pens going.) All together a nice pen and a good writer."
M. L., Jamaica Plain, MA

Jinhao Dancing Dragons overlay

"I received the Jin Hao Wooden Chariot, and Dancing Dragons today. They are truly works of art as well as reliable smooth-writing pens that actually write better than many of my expensive European models. Thanks for your kind attention, first class service and the handwritten note. I look forward to purchasing more pens from you in the near future."
K. G., Columbus, OH

"Norman, got the Dancing Dragons pen today. It's beautiful! Thanks for the note also...Writes great! Using Ajisai Iroshizuku (blue) ink from Pilot that I got at the Philadelphia Pen Show. Love it!"
E. S., Albuquerque, NM

"Hey Norman, received my pens [also the Khaki Squares] on Tuesday, thanks for the quick shipping. I absolutely love every one. I already own a Cross and a Lamy and these put them to shame. The weight and feel are excellent. The fact that they are metal and that they cap and post firmly was an awesome surprise. Thanks and we will talk again soon."
K. D., Toronto, Canada

Crocodile Amethyst Outré

CrocodileAmethystOutreCapPen_small.jpg

"Hi Norman. Well, I used the converter that you included with the Outre and have to say that everything is working perfectly, of course. The more I use the pen, the smoother I find it. It is a lovely pen and I am very happy that I purchased it from you. Thank you for the care you take with your customers. Your pens leave your hands in prime condition and the support you offer your clients, after purchase, is exemplary. Thank you."
C. P-L, Pierrefonds, Canada

"Norman, I just received this beautiful pen and wanted to say it is absolutely beautiful and "writes like a dream." I take a lot of notes and it is just perfect in size and weight for notes -- just works like a charm. It works so well, that I'd like to place an order for another one. I especially enjoy your personalized notes and as always, than you so much for all your help!!!"
S. R., Mount Olive, NC

"Well this blows my mind! I had one of the original MB pens exactly like this (minus the top "ruby") and liked the pen but not the filling mechanism. So now I have the same precious resin pen and a sensible filling system!...One thing I do like is that the "ruby" isn't deep red. It actually looks more like a padparadscha sapphire, which I like better!... I'm amazed at the careful workmanship on this, thanks!"
K. S., Omaha, NE

Jinhao Jasper celluloid

JinhaoCelluloidJasperPenCap_small.jpg

"Dear Norman, It seems like with each order, the pens just keep getting better. The Jinhao Jasper that arrived this morning looks like it belongs on some executive's or statesman's desk with the translucence giving it a presence that is truly noticed. Ink flow is excellent, and the nib puts down a most satisfying medium/fine line that is right now in rich PR Sherwood Green. The solid feel bespeaks a well-made pen, and overall it is a joy to engage this pen on paper. Thanks so much for making these pens available to us, Norman. I did not expect another pen case, but it is most welcome and as fine and beautiful as the first one. This one went to my wife for her Jinhao Ivory, and she was thrilled. Thanks also for your note. I notice the various inks you use to write them, and this has gradually gotten me out of my blue ink rut. I used black ink for nearly 30 years before I would even go to blue. Now, when I see some of the colors you are using, they interest me, and I am willing to try some of them. The greens I ordered are very nice, and I will enjoy using them."
C. K., San Antonio, TX

"The pen arrived and is certainly an attractive specimen. I have an imitation centennial made by Hero which wasn't too good. The Jinhao looks a lot better. As regards its size, it is closer to the International (the smaller model) than the centennial. Its cap is smaller than that of the international. I can't use Jinhao's pens for spare parts for Parker, but it is certainly a nice pen in its own right. Many thanks."
C. S., Israel

Baoer 8-Horses

Baoer8Horse3Random_small.jpg

"Hi Norman, I'm gonna rave about the Baoer 8 Horses that came today. It is the smoothest nib I have ever used! That includes many $100-200 pens in my collection. Nobody is going to believe that this is a $20 pen. The brass construction gives it a solid feel, and it balances perfectly in my hand even when posted. I have the bronze finish, and am running Pelikan Brilliant Brown - makes for a nice combination!"
T. T., Ann Arbor, MI

"The Baoer 8- Horse Silver & Bronze Fountain Pen is time past with its Asian calligraphy and its engraved horses. The black cap with its striking gold accent crowns this beautiful pen. It's medium weight fits snugly in your shirt pocket and will be well noticed by everyone you meet. I love how the cap fits tightly on the end of the pen, well balanced. It's like writing with a royal scepter. A pen of antiquity is a welcome addition to anyone's collection. I'm glad I acquired both the silver and bronze."
N. S., Van Nuys, CA

"I received the inks and the surprise pen last Monday, which would have been October 1st. I absolutely love the Baoer 8 Horses pen. It writes like a dream and moves across the page so quickly I have to make sure I don't end up scribbling words that don't exist! It's filled with the Private Reserve Velvet Black and I love the ink. I knew I needed black, but I didn't know I would enjoy it so much. Who knew such a 'boring' color could be so much fun to use...I still can't believe how a pen could float across a page. I almost feel guilty that I want to use it more than the other two I have. It might be new pen addiction, but honestly, the pen is simply amazing."
K. B., Etna, CA

Jinhao Pearl Windows

JinhaoPearlWindowsCapped_small.jpg

"Dear Norman, I received the Pearl Windows fountain pen. Yikes it lovely! It writes like a dream. I'm using it for some extremely important healthful New Year journaling/processing. With purple ink. Thanks also for your gracious help in discerning the efficaciousness of my "hint" regarding this pen to my husband! It worked out perfectly!"
V. S. P., Plymouth, MN

"Dear Norman, my beautiful Pearl Windows pen just arrived. When I ordered it, I wasn't sure how it would measure up to the reigning favourite (my Sapphire), but I was willing to give it a try. I was surprised at how impressive and pleasingly hefty a pen it is. After I prepped it, I loaded it up with ink and gave it a whirl. It glided gracefully across the page like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers! When I'm not using it, I keep it out just so I can admire it. It's definitely a keeper. The downside to my purchase? It's whetted my appetite for at least one more of your pens! Thanks for providing another lovely product!"
C. E., Toronto, Canada

"Hallo Norman, the windows shocked me -- is very heavy (which I love), very wide and with a firm and steady writing. I am very happy with it and left all my other pens aside for the time being -- am impressed.
If I knew i would have purchased the window panel too, guess i will very soon anyway. Thank you!"
F. G., Switzerland
