Spent a week in Boston for daughter's graduation; she just finished her doctorate in medical planning at Harvard. Coming from the swamps of south La. where it takes 6 weeks to get an electrician to lay an electrical conduit and simultaneously rupture a gas line, it was a revelation. I had made a trip to Stockbridge, then a small rural village just an hour or so from Boston years ago, but I was unprepared for how civilized and convenient things can be in a great city. So many American cities have failed due to economic collapse and poor space utilization. Think Houston, Detroit, L.A.,Chicago, Baton Rouge, Cleveland, Baltimore...though YMMV. It was amazing how efficient and civilized life is for someone who knew nothing of the city with Uber, AirBNB, an inexpensive quick direct flight from New Orleans, great seafood (like Louisiana used to have before British Petroleum) on Cape Cod, fantastic history, bookstores, universities...the list is too long. Unlike La., you can actually buy ink in stores. boo13 is happy and will return in the Fall.

tl;dr: loved my first trip to civilization.

How can you say Chicago has failed?  Have you ever been there?  And by the way if you want civilization in New England you'll find it in Providence RI not Boston

I forgot to mention one civilized option in The Bay State   one can drive in the breakdown lane at certain times.  Rhode Island state troopers make a fortune on MA drivers going to the beaches and driving in the breakdown lane....not legal in RI.  We needed she revenue

Hi Jerry,
Yes numerous trips to Chicago, used to do business with Craftsman Wood Products there. All these cities have areas that are livable and in good shape, and some sections with serious problems.

As far as fun in traffic goes, there are a lot of small towns in Louisiana (Port Allen, Port Barrie, Washington, etc.) that think they could not survive without generous donations from passers through. There is no chance that a female, a black person, a motorcyclist or an out of state license plate would not receive a traffic ticket for a violation along the half mile stretch that the highway passes through the town of Port Barrie. One of the local gendarmes stopped me for a pleasant conversation one night recently, and was so concerned for my welfare that he asked what medications I regularly took. I asked why he wanted to know, and he replied that it was because one of my tail lights was out. The fee for his medical consultation was $35. Once David I. cures everyone in NY and Iowa, he might consider setting up a traffic oriented practice along US Hwy 190.
