Couple years back I picked up a pen collection of about 100 pens, ranging from parts and "lonamees" up to... well... this one.

Not only is the "Oriental" pattern quite scarce (how often do ya' see them, relative to Sheratons, Vines, etc), but the model number offers additional scarcity.

Waterman introduced the lever filler just about a year before switching its numbering system in 1917. The "4" indicates silver overlay. The 12 1/2 PSF (Pocket Self Filler) for a slender pen with #2 nib. Compared to pens starting a year later, the PSF pens have flared barrel threads. All told, a most uncommon pen.

Dunno what I'll do with this one. For now, I'm enjoying owning it. Andy Beliveau did great work on it.

regards

David

okay, I am envious of this one. This is pretty awesome. I like the oriental, and hand engraved stuff...

Actually, Waterman first advertised its lever-fillers around two years before changing the numbering system. And not all of the PSF lever-fillers had the narrow, raised threads -- most of them, in fact, are of the later, flush type. The flush threads begin to appear in Waterman ads about a year and a half after the PSF pens make their first appearance -- noting that some engraved images with raised threads get reused sporadically for a good while afterwards.

I don't know about you all, but I mostly see orientals in gold filled and not often in sterling. A very nice pen, David.

I'd have to say that my experience is the opposite: significantly more sterling examples than gold filled.

Always good to hear from those with strong focus on this era. So 1915 for the appearance of PSF?

Yep, advertisements pose challenges... artistic license and reuse of old images, etc.

Earliest ads for the Waterman PSF lever-fillers are mid-March of 1915. Haven't found any earlier so far.

I'm also trying to nail down exactly when in 1917 the numbering system changed. Best I can tell at this point is some time between late Feb and late August.

Just curious, did this overlay pattern come in any other size, or is it particular to the 1/2 size? The reason I asked is because I just saw one of the board member's haul from the LA pen show on Facebook, and I wasn't sure whether this pattern came in any other size. Thanks!

Hi soot.

That was the very pen from this thread, now with a new owner. Small world ;)

Hi David,

Thanks for the heads up. I scrolled down and read up about it... Any idea as to the oriental overlay in other sizes?

Regards,

Bob
