Did anyone notice this recent auction for a Mandarin Lady Duofold "desk pen" with a yellow taper?  It's a good looking Frankenpen.

I got to wondering where that yellow moire taper came from.  The answer is in the 1927 Parker catalog in the PCA library (different from Bill Acker's 1927 reprint).  Page 17, which describes porcelain desk bases, states "With Black Parker Pen and any one of seven colored Moire tapers {shown on page 21} $6.50."  (note:  Black Parker Pen = Black and Gold)  Page 21 lists the Moire tapers in green, mauve, yellow, blue, magenta, grey, and coral and shows the tapers mounted on the thin $2.75 Black and Gold model.

But note also the blind cap threads:

Remarkable indeed. At first sight one would think that these items do not belong together but the picture showing the complete pen with taper attached shows that it is a quite attractive combination (picture 4 in the auction).

Is there anything known on how the moire pattern was produced? And how can a Mandarin yellow barrel end up with moire yellow blind cap threads?
