I have admittedly vague recollection that Dan had a proto-Fold in his book that channeled this design. I don't insist.

Your vague recollection is right: this patent and the prototype pen are shown on page 191 (see also page 192 for alternative prototype in this design) of the Duofold book

Funnily enough, just saw this today. I picked this up a couple of months ago. They definitely do exist.
