Wahl's Skyline series saw many variants. All have a clip that runs over the derby (top piece) of pen. That top piece is threaded and thus removable. Here are couple examples.

Wahl also made a lower line Skyline-like pen called Streamliner. At first glance it looks like a Skyline, but note the clip does NOT wrap the derby. In the pic to follow, Skyline instructions are included but pen set is stickered "Streamliner".

A post on the Zosslist today cited an ebay ad offering a Modern Stripe ("Moire") pen which appears to be a Streamliner (clip is non-wrap variety) rather than Skyline. The ad calls it a Skyline, but hey no one has perfect knowledge Posted Image

To best of my knowledge (and I suspect, to collector convention) Moire pens are known only as Skyline, not Streamliner.

The derbies are removable, and a derby/clip swap seems at least possible, though that does not prove it occurred in this case. I cannot quite make out derby color to see if it obviously was a mismatch. In any case, I pulled the images from ebay, montaged them, tried to clean them up a bit , and offer them for consideration. I don't quite buy the "early pen" claim/speculation from the ad, mainly because I have no information to suggest non-wrap clip is "early", as evidence is out there that the clip indicates the different series (Streamliner), not production date.

Ad link (noting ebay purges old ads, so in few months this won't work)

So... a Modern Stripe Wahl Streamliner (non Skyline)????

Umm, I'm certainly willing to be proven wrong, but I've been under the impression that this pen

is a Streamliner. I believe it was Syd who so identified it for me, but again I could be misremembering my source. So, umm, got some primary source for "your" Streamliner?

Not sure.. now ;)

Had been under the impression that my recollection was the blue set above had streamliner price sticker. Did I scan all angles on the tag... no. But, have doubts I would've advertised the pen as Streamliner if the tag said Skyline. Stlll, even I make pen errors... hard to believe, I know ;)

Your shot shows a high set clip different from either in my post above that.

Food fer thought. I remain unable to claim strong answer.

Richard, I was looking on your fine website for the solution to this wee mystery, and I came across something on this page
http://www.richardsp...coll/col_01.htm

The second-to-last paragraph contains the following information, which I am quoting below:
"The Skyline was also made in a reduced-trim version called the Thrift, without the Double Checked warranty mark and with a clip that did not wrap over the derby."

The cap on the pen that accompanies the above text appears (to my eyes) quite similar to the mystery pen on Zoss.

Any thoughts?

I have to admit I've never heard of the Streamliner model, so I was pleased to see this discussion come up today!

Another of those Streamliner-like Eversharps with the clip Richard Binder shows above.  Jonathan Veley calls it a pressclip (on the pencil, at least, the clip has ears pressed into the cap).  This one shows the barrel.

I don't know what the model is that Richard has posted, but here is part of a page from the 1947 Wahl-Eversharp Service Manual.  It shows a Streamliner pen that looks like a Skyline in every respect except that the clip ends at the base of the derby.  This is like the pen in David's post.  Although it is not mentioned on this page, the Streamliner pens and the moire pattern pens were fitted with a plain Eversharp nib, not the "banner" nibs of the Skyline.

Note that the barrel on this pen, whatever the model name, is not the same as a Skyline, nor as the Streamliner per the page in my post above.

Yep. The Streamliner and the Skhylines in Modern Stripe are low end of the original price range. Of course the striped Skylines today are relatively high cachet items, the only done all-Celluloid.

Here is an ad cut from an un-named 1942 catalog, that identifies Richard's as a student pen.  The Streamliner has a different clip.
