Many of us build "mini collections", clusters of related pens sharing element(s) in common: model, color, trim, filler, etc. Obviously, definitions for these are malleable. Where is the line between "mini" and "not mini"?

Over the years, besides my pursuit with rather completist bent of the Parker Vacumatic (which itself I suppose, comprises all sorts of mini collections), I collect a nice mix of vintage makes and models. A well honed "mini collection' can blossom into one of those "most comprehensive collections in the world" thingies, which of course make for fun (if emphatic) discussion. I brought to the Philadelphia Pen Show (Jan 2011), what perhaps are the world's most extensive collections of Parker Vacumatic with "Vacumatic cap-band", of Sheaffer Balance with off-catalogue double/triple/fish-scale cap-bands, of Sheaffer orange plastic flat-top, and even of Canadian Sheaffer "Waspi-Balances".

And, yeah, I know... go prove there are no hidden collections out there that top these. I get it. ;)

Still...

I've had interest at length in the Sheaffer sub-brands (2nd tier particularly from the 1930's). One plastic pattern from around 1936 appeals, featuring black spots on pearlescent green or gray background. I cobbled together a rough essay on this pattern a couple years back in honor of finally buying a fairly rare oversized pen in green, and I do like evocative name "Screaming Souls in Purgatory" applied by someone (I fear I've forgotten who) on FPN. The pen does not resemble the painting, and perhaps Daniel's "birdseye" (meant apparently for the maple, not the frozen broccoli) is more descriptive in a nuts and bolts way, but is less evocative than Screaming Souls in Purgatory or for short, "Screamers" for these pens.

I have found some trade catalog pages (iirc) and adverts for these. Slowly I've built a collection, finding catalogued and off-catalogue variants. I have a nice... mini collection. Indeed it is possible (yeah, have me go prove it) that I have the most variants in any individual collection.

I have yet to do formal review of pens and paper to clarify which imprints are found, though I currently believe it is found with VACUUM and WASP VACUUM-FIl markings.

I have enough paper and enough variants that a PENnant article likely will result.

So, I present my collection of Sheaffer WASP Vacuum-Fill "Screaming Souls in Purgatory pens". An overview, then some detailed shots.

These are rough shots, quick flash without light tent. Works for this purpose.

The Collection: 14 Pieces.

I do own a mint stickered gray Standard pen and have several duplicates of the above pens.

I am in the market for the gray OS, and can offer a green OS in trade.

I also seek the gray desk base.

The advert pages seem to suggest a Slender model. I've not seen the actual pen.

Comments are, of course, invited.

Nice collection, David.
In the ads we have, this pattern is shown as one of those in a WASP Clipper (along with the "snakeskin" and "circuitboard"). Some seem to have imprints (Vacuum-Fil) in your photos. Do the others have imprints? If so, what do they say?

Also, the colloquially-known Oversize is actually cataloged as a Large, yes?

Mike

Lovely collection, David, but why only lever-filler and twister Screamers?
Here's a plunger-filling Screamer in green .
Cheers,
Gerry

Hi Hugh,

Not sure. Via ebay, I've bought two essentially identical desk sets of this type. This is either the first or the second ;)

Hi Mike,

I'm well overdue to reexamine the Screamer paper in my possession, including the couple ads you tossed my way.

Took quick look at the pens in the tray (did not hunt my duplicates or try to review the "sold pens" information from my website.

All the pens save those with black ends have WASP Vacuum-Fil imprints.

Of interest, the two pens with black ends- one each in gray and in green- have "The Clipper... WASP... etc" imprints.

regards

David

Hi,

Here's a shot of my two off-catalogue twist-fill WASP "Screamers". I've seen only standard size for these. In fact, I've never seen an oversized WASP in twist-fill.

I'm pleased to update this thread (could have started fresh, but I'm trying to avoid too much duplication), with latest additions to my Screamer pen collection, making the collection more or less complete, including a number of variants not documented in available Sheaffer literature, and including a couple examples of the plastic from other makers.

At this point the full Screamer collection includes, in both Gray and Green:

  • oversized pen with WASP VACUUM-FIL imprint: documented
  • standard size pen with WASP VACUUM-FIL imprint: documented
  • standard pen with black ends and The Clipper: WASP imprint. undocumented
  • standard pen, but twist-filler. undocumented
  • desk set: so far undocumented
Ten items.

Additionally shown are
  • Traveler brand Combo. Huge thing. Tolerable quality.
  • Epenco (Eagle Pen Company). Shape is similar to the Sheaffer
This is the most complete collection presented publicly.

Is it a complete collection though?

Not quite.

I have seen otherwise typical standard size models (matching ends, lever fill) with lined clip and simple "VACUUM" imprint, at least in green. Presumably gray can be found too. Earlier product? Parallel product for different market? Don't know. Were OS's done as "VACUUM". Don't know. Given how few pen have been seen is OS and given how few "VACUUM" marked pens are found, even if a "VACUUM" OS were made, we might never see one.

I do have the green "VACUUM" not shown in this shot. Have never seen the gray, if it exists.

Too, looking at the available ads, I've wondered if a Slender model was made. I've never seen one.

I've included a few shots below, one with greater resolution than the others.

Amazing, how a whim to pursue a quirky pen can turn into a several year hunt.

Hi David,

Great spread!! Those desk sets are outstanding, to me the "Crown Jewels" of the collection visually . It's amazing how well the "Traveller" fits in too.

Blog post coming next week. I found an interesting variation on one of these that I previously had thought was a duplicate.

Nice spread. The pencils don't float my boat from the collecting angle, but they have merit no doubt for history/context.

Suspect I have 4 of the above lying about somewhere or other, but didn't include them in the final photo. First photo at top of thread shows some. The "utility" low-line pencils seem to open the door to fair number of possible variants.

Nice collection, information, and education...thanks!

I am taking on an ever increasing interest in the Clippers specifically but this range gives some great comparison and an evolution of sorts.

Would anyone know of the specific dates of manufacture for these individual styles? Is there a fairly all-encompassing reference or site?

Thanks, and best regards,
M.

Hi MIchael,

Welcome. We are not the largest Board on the block, but you'll find our vintage pen content is not unimpressive ;)

We've had couple overlapping threads on the Screamers before (noting that some Screamers indeed are marked "WASP CLiPPER"f, and the following threads will show some more images of these pens

http://www.fountainp...amer-desk-bases

http://www.fountainp...mer-happy-david

http://www.fountainp...-wasp-screamers

http://www.fountainp...-gray-desk-set/

At risk of grandiosity, the current most detailed references on the Sheaffer sub-brand pens we started calling "Screaming Souls in Purgatory" (those Dali-esque mouths) are... well... my posts.

If you read PENnant Magazine (you should be) you know I've scribbled a bit about Sheaffers (article last issue on Canadian Balance tweaks). One of these days I'll do article there or Penworld on the Screamers but starting that is probably months away.

I have a couple precious trade catalogue ads showing the pens. I believe the ad dates to 1936. Hafta check.

Well, I will finally be adding a Screamer to my gathering, courtesy my interest being piqued here and in David's Pennant article. Snagged this today, will take some photos when it comes in and gets cleaned up a bit...

I am addicted!

Now, if I can increase my collection of 2 pens to 3, I would be able to enjoy a wider variety of pens in my collection.

Yes, I have only 2 pens in my collection!
