Sheaffer set stickered NIB flex

14 April 2014 - 12:35 AM

I walk into an antique shop in downtown Shepardstown WV, and after looking around, I ask the owner if he has any fountain pens.  He reaches into the corner of a tall case where I would have missed it, and pulls out a box containing a Sheaffer set with a sticker still wrapped around the section.  It's new in the box with no sign of ink usage.  The window is clear and shiny with no scratches.

What struck me is the flex of the tines, which I've never seen on this type of nib.  I decided I must have it, and we agreed on $25.

Now, the decision I'm faced with is whether to use it.   :o

Conklin desk pen crescent-filler - did it exist?

The title says it all.  Has anyone seen a Conklin desk pen crescent-filler?

Lifetime Waterman with white dot

03 February 2014 - 01:28 AM

I picked this up in an antique jewelry shop in Skippack, Pennsylvania.  Note the white dot in the section.  And you thought Sheaffer started white dots, eh?

Balance black and pearl going green

07 January 2014 - 01:37 PM

David posted the following photo in the mini-collection thread, prompting me to start this Sheaffer topic.

Note the green tint on the cap with the missing clip.  I have a black and pearl OS Balance that has my all-time favorite nib of every pen I've owned.  Like David's pen, mine is turning green but at the threads in the barrel, and the tint is ever-so-slowly creeping along.

I've disassembled the pen and cleaned it, but the green is not removable with any cleaner I have.  The pen is always inked and always with Montblanc Toffee ink, though flushed from time to time.

Is green peculiar to this Sheaffer material?  Has anyone discovered a specific compound in certain inks that causes pearl to turn green, or has discovered a method to remove it?

FYI.  I was at the preview Sunday, and I took a couple shots with my mobile phone.  I decided not to bid.
