A Slender Maxima?

17 April 2015 - 06:06 AM

Hi guys,

I remembered David's article on the Slender Maxima after seeing this pen. This is advertised as a Major but seems to have the correct features for a Slender Maxima. Striped section and feather clip for the old Vacs plus the Senior Maxima-style cap-band. I'd say that it has the usual Senior Maxima nib as well but this one sports the ten feathers that are said to be features of the replacements for that on the Duofolds. Would appreciate some insight about this. Thank you!

Where do you get your pens?

15 April 2015 - 03:27 AM

Hi all,

A question from the other end of the world (for most of y'all here): This one is particularly directed to veteran collectors. Where do you guys get the bulk of your excellent collections? I know that the standard answer might be a combination of Ebay, flea markets or collector-to-collector transactions, but even so, could you describe which among these mediums you most frequently go to? For example, I don't think David I.'s best specimens (like his recent post of special-banded brown Sheaffers) come mostly from Ebay unless I'm not looking hard enough there myself. Here in Manila, I only know of a couple of guys who are really into vintage and as far as I know they mostly get stuff through Ebay. It's one of the best options for us here who are far from the great centers of FP use like the US and Europe. So what's it like to collect FPs from where you guys are from?

Many thanks for responses!

Vacumatics - Striped Sections and Jewels

21 March 2015 - 02:04 PM

Hi guys,

I've always wondered why striped jewels and sections weren't used on all Vac models. My initial guess would be that they were a mark of premium quality for high-end Vacs, but apart from that, are there other reasons for their limited use? Was the striped celluloid structurally more difficult to fashion for the purposes of a section? Perhaps it was a method of conserving the limited supply of precious rod stock?

Additionally, I noticed that no Azure Vacs have striped sections or jewels even for Senior Maximas. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks all!

One size fits all? (Vacumatic Jewels)

10 February 2015 - 09:00 AM

Hi everyone,

It's no secret that the Vacumatic underwent many design changes during the period of its production. From streamlining the pen's contours to overhauls in the filling mechanism, there are huge differences as well as slight nuances that may prevent a collector from switching parts between pens. That being said, I'd like to know if it's possible to interchange the top cap jewels of different Senior Maximas with each other. Were the cap jewels subjected to significant changes in terms of dimensions through the Senior Maxima's existence? I'm asking since I have seen quite a few SMs online that seem to be worth salvaging despite having defects such as missing said jewels. Thanks!
