#41116 Wood tool box

Posted by Earthdawn on 04 June 2015 - 06:17 AM in Elements of Collecting: Hunting, Valuing and Polemicizing

I bought one of the Harbor Freight Tool Chests a while back.  I think I like their drawer arrangement a little better, and I think the wood is a bit more attractive than on the Costco item. However, I haven't really compared them, and I think I paid a bit more for my chest, so the Costco chest does look like a good buy.

Allan, I just have to say, it isn't much comparison - the Costco is much better construction, somewhat in inverse proportion to the price difference. I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

BTW: there was a hilarious thing go down today over at FPG. This Costco box had been shown over there a couple weeks ago, and today a guy put up two separate threads for "pen boxes". What he had was one Harbor Freight, one Costco, and he had put pen trays in the bottom drawers. He showed pics with ink bottles in other places, even had a drawer with rings in it (as in jewelry). After going through all the trouble to cut two pen trays to fit, he was now offering each of these boxes at the low, low price of ... $400.00!

GTFO, I say.

Yea I just saw that over there... pretty sad to say the least.

Ill be at CostCo Friday to pick one up ;)

I got issue 1 & 2 at the Long Island show and I am really enjoying them. Fantastic articles that are really well written and interesting. Great photos too!

#40063 Scented inks, anyone?

Posted by Earthdawn on 18 March 2015 - 05:35 AM in Miscellanea: Ink, Paper, Calligraphy, Journals, Storage, Turning, etc

The only one I have tried is a bottle of Love You by Mont Blanc. The scent is strong but it to dissipates quickly. Flow is fine though I have it in a 1.1 stub that flows well so it could be a drier ink I would not really notice it. I bought it when I was in Dromgoole's in Houston back in November simply because he had a few bottles left and I had never seen them for sale before. It went outdated in November of 2012, not that really matters but it does show how old it is.

#40055 Esterbrook ID please

No question about models is too elementary.  Questions about models/variants/collecting are the Board's core purpose in life. Offhand, I have to do some review for those bandless dollar-ish pens.  Sure, just chase away the curious... ;)

Oh, I'm happy to talk here, and I did a little bit. What I usually note is those type of subjects whither and die with few responses, and ED and I speak frequently next door. I can keep all of the banter here, naturally, but there is no reason to at least acknowledge the somewhat specialist nature of FPB.

I went to the last post posted ... and did not see what you wrote above David... otherwise I would have responded to it.

YES indeed Jon and I know each other from the "other" place and talk often. Him taking liberties at me is fine and he already knew that. I don't want to cloud the thread with that but you brought it up and it should be clear that Jon and I are on the same page. Plus being stubborn and from NY I don't scare off easy or take things to heart.  ;)

Besides the fact that he hit the nail on the head, I absolutely know next to nothing about Esterbrooks... BUT this board being what it is was just the reason I posted my question here. The minds on this board exceed any source out there and thats a fact.

Sooo back on topic, David do let me know if you have those nibs listed somewhere that I am not finding.

EDIT !!! ~ I guess I could have asked you in person now that I just found out you were at the show! I posted at FPG's thread how disappointed I am that I didn't even know you were there....

Have I ever mentioned I have a tray of exotic point Osmiroids that fit. Music, Stub, da works...

Nope... and I spent a lot of time on your site last night and did not see a "nibs" page ?

I was going to ask Paul about them more when we were talking at the LI show but I completely forgot.

Thank you for the help !!!

I can proudly say I am an Easterbrook nOOb and have a lot to learn ... and that means I have a lot to look forward to.

@Jon thanks for the help. I read Brian's site and it gave good insight and educated me further for sure.

@gweddig you are right as I found a LOT of nibs for sale etc. It looks like I chose a good pen to have some fun with a learn more about.

@Norm I tried the same thing with the same result. I took the nib unit from my M101n and it sat exactly the same as yours. I will be looking for just Esterbrook nibs for now though the 2668 nib in it now is great for everyday writing and notes. I took it for a spin at work today and really enjoyed it.

#40034 Esterbrook ID please

If I'm not mistaken, those particular Dollar pens occurred as the world approached war in the early 1940's. All manufacturers were finding ways to reduce or eliminate metal usage, so the 'bands' were just linear indentations in the plastics. And, I've just looked at Brians's site to confirm, and he also mentions thinner plating on the clip to save metal. But definitely a "Dollar" pen.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

I forgot to post that I do remember him saying it was a 1941 version.... sorry..

I see the nib is a unit much like Pelican uses. How can I tell what will fit into it if I want to swap out the nib unit? Is there a standard size to look for?

Thank you again for the help Jon

#40032 Esterbrook ID please

Posted by Earthdawn on 16 March 2015 - 03:45 AM in USA "Other": Bexley; Cross; Esterbrook; Carter, Chilton, Moore, Leboeuf, Dunn, Triad, etc.

So I was at the Long Island Pen show this weekend and wanted to be sure I got a "REAL" Easterbrook from Brian Anderson. I got a nice user grade as my first one and of course in the excitement I forgot most of what he told me.

So instead of emailing him while they are driving home and asking him to repeat what he told me lol I figured I would ask the experts here.

Great pen and i really am enjoying using it. I may have found another slippery slope.

So here are the pics. What is throwing me off in my "google" search are the cap bands. I have found the clip but not on a cap with those bands. They are just engraved in with no metal.

Thank you in advance for the help.
