#43922 Vintage Japanese brushes and ink sticks in wooden box

Posted by Norm on 30 March 2017 - 12:35 PM in Miscellanea: Ink, Paper, Calligraphy, Journals, Storage, Turning, etc

It is a sumi set.  The ink  stick is rubbed on the stone with water to make it soluble and it is then used for painting pictures by the same name and also for writing. Google sumi then click on images to see the type of art associated with the set.

PS alternate spelling is sumi-e.

#43829 Spool cabinet saves space

Posted by Norm on 30 January 2017 - 08:59 PM in Elements of Collecting: Hunting, Valuing and Polemicizing

Today I located a spool cabinet that essentially provides twice the space of a machinists tool chest.  I think it looks pretty nice too.

Can anyone tell me if this marking has a designation put there by Parker of is it someone's cryptic personalization?

#43693 Can anyone tell me any thing about this Skrip bottle?

Posted by Norm on 12 October 2016 - 02:12 PM in SHEAFFER (USA "Big Five")

Now that I know what it's called, I looked on ebay for Safety Skrip and found a 1929 magazine ad that has a lot of information.

I found a picture of the Safety ink bottle in a PCA 1934 catalog.  It shows it with a 5 piece Lifetime Feathertouch Enemble set but no explanation.

Thank you. Very interesting.  The more I handle it, the more I feel like it is hard rubber. I rubbed it and it did smell like sulphur. I paid $8.00 for it.

Thanks.  So is this bottle 1924 or earlier? And was it cheaper than a glass bottle? Was it intended to be a portable ink supply? Was it a student ink container?

I think it's made out of wood but it might be hard rubber or some other kind of plastic..

#43622 KOH-I-NOOR Radpidograph

Posted by Norm on 15 September 2016 - 12:03 PM in R & R: (Repair and Restoration)

Koh-I-Noor makes a pen cleaner called Rapido-eze which is designed to dissolve pigmented inks like Higgins India Ink. It works well on technical pens but they require several hour so soaking.

#43521 Sheaffer Full Size Lifetime Feathertouch

Posted by Norm on 02 August 2016 - 08:54 PM in Post Your Pen Finds

When I saw this in the showcase at the antique store with a price of $42.29, I thought there must be a missing nib or tipping, or something else very wrong with it, especially since it was sitting next to a very small Sheaffer Balance with a price of 150.  When I checked it out, it looked like it was in pretty good condition.  No cracks, only one small place with brassing on the cap ring.  The lighting in those places never is very good but I figured it was worth the price so I got it. It even feels like the ink sac is still pliable.  When I got home, I noticed that the white dot was recessed.  That seems strange.  Does any one know if that was normal or did someone mess with it?  It looks to me like it is from the early 1940's.
