I have a question. As collectors of pens we no doubt have more than a few. My question is; how many pens in your collection do you keep inked and ready to go? All of them? Five? Ten? How many? The way I see it, the more you have inked up the more pens you have to keep using so they don't go dry from neglect. Has anyone had this problem? My more or less usual routine when I buy a pen (hopefully one that works) I fill it, use it until it's empty, clean and flush it and store it in it's own plastic tube. If I really like the pen I'll keep it running longer. You know that after a while you begin to have favorites that are always at the ready. Any comments?

Everything will be all right in the end.

If it is not alright, it is not yet the end.

I fall more on the collector side of the collector-user spectrum.  It would be tough to keep 4000 pens inked and ready to roll ;)  I usually have two pens up and running at one time, and generally use about 6-8 routinely during any given year.

I suspect I'm not near the median on this.

I don't know if collectors have lots and use little - I suspect there is a lot of truth to this.  Maybe I own 1,000, maybe more.  I currently have four inked up and a yearly total of seven or eight.  Different pens do get used over the years as the touchdown was a purchase last year - got it, inked it up - unusual.  The Boston hump filler I was messing with and it's got a good sac so I inked it up for now but, will retire it when it goes dry - too nice a pen to risk breaking.  First two pens I ever bought I still use frequently and I bought those in '80 and '82.  Sad, they are often older than people that work at my clients - what's that make me?

I have a fair share of users and few collection-grade pens. Of the users I always keep two Omas extra desk pens inked (blue and black) plus a normal pen to carry around.

I fall into the user grade collector category. The number of pens that are in ink varies from one or two to ten plus. As one runs dry I switch to the next (unless it is a favourite).

Currently I have six in ink: a black CS 475; black Selsdon (very famous if you are a British accountant); blue marbled WHS The Seal (manufactured by CS); 1950's black and brown marbled Mentmore; probably 1959/60 green shadow wavesque Unique, the pen is foreign but it looks like Unique added some 'personalising' parts, such as the steel nib and jewel, and finally a pretty 1939 green marble Parkette Delux with an unpleasant steel nib which arrived this week.

Often pens arrive with sacs which have been inked and there is enough dried ink for me to just fill them with water.

When I get a 'new' pen, I will clean it and write with it a little. I am using 4 pens that I just cleaned.  I also usually have only two or three inked at a time so there are more than i usually have right now. It's 7.

No more than two inked at any time.

I usually have about 5-6 inked at any given time, out of my 100+ collection.

(I have another 10-15 that are listed and/or being restored to be listed- I will test those as well before selling them)
