I picked up a standard size Eversharp Fifth Avenue, and in the course of taking it apart to re-sac, noticed that the nib and feed weren't being held in place by anything other than dried ink. After disassembling and cleaning, nothing was holding them in place. I checked a W-E repair manual (everybody here should be a member of PCA!) and discovered that there was a collar of some kind that held the nib and feed and secured them within the section/hood. So now I need to do something to recreate that collar, either by getting another one or finding a kluge. Someone mentioned using a soda straw, but I'm a bit skeptical that a single straw would fit around the nib and feed and make a tight seal within the shell.

What do you-all do?

Vance

There are two versions of the Fifth Avenue guts. The earlier version uses an ordinary Magic Feed and nib; they're the same size as the parts in a Skyline. Is this what you have? (The later version's nib and feed are much smaller than the usual size, and these need the hard rubber collar you've mentioned.)

Mine's the latter, alas. Is there a substitute for the collar?

Nope. But if it's round, and it's hard rubber, it can be made. You'd want hard rubber for this part because it has some elasticity compared to plastic. It has to stretch to fit over the feed and nib, but still be tight enough that the nib won't shift.

If you need a Fifth Avenue Collar give me a shout. I have a few NOS ones that could be had. Or I could be had if you twist my arm - ouch!

I'll have to look at the ones I have. I had one of the earlier versions with no collar, and I'm almost positive the feed and nib looked nothing like that of a Skyline nib and feed. If I recall (and I'll have to doublecheck) the Skyline feed ribs are vertical, and the feed I pulled out of my Fifth Avenue had thin horizontal ribs. The feed and nib were definitely bigger than the second generation ones with a collar as well, so I know it wasn't one of those.

Matt, I hate to ask a favor, but is there any chance of a larger image? I've grown to find the Fifth Avenue oddly fascinating and would love to have a large enough scan to be able to clearly read the details (to tide me over until I find a copy of Cliff Lawrence's Wahl-Eversharp Repair Manual, from which I'll guess this image came).

Does one knock out the nib in a Fifth Avenue pushing forward or do you push back toward the sac nipple?
