I have an interesting looking new Vacumatic headed my way. I asked the seller if the stripes in the cap looked blue with light shining through them and he said they didn't, but I'm still pretty sure it's a Ripley. A little damaged, but it came cheap.

Certainly possible. :)

Problem with these tends to be the caps. Torrelli probably could do something with it...

Ok, I *do* have to ask (since I'm still learning): that appears to me to be some pretty damn serious damage. Even figuring that some mythic repair person can apply magic (Torrelli?), what is the value of a pen when it is NOT in great condition, but great condition considering it was previously trashed? Wouldn't even the best of repairs still be, at the end of the day, a big repair in this type of situation?

Hi,

Torrelli can take plastic from a second cap, perhaps even from a barrel and replace the missing top. Too, plain black plastic can be used for the missing couple mm, including forming a lip for the jewel. Such a pen would not have the value of an intact pen, but would have far more value than the parts. This is a quite scarce and desirable pen.

Thanks, David. It is heartening to see that there can still be value in such a damaged pen.

I saw this one and was scared off by the cap. If it turns out to be a Ripley, and you find a way to repair it-- WOW! If neither works out, you still will have some great parts for a very good deal.

Please let us know when it shows up!

Unfortunately, even plastic from another cap or barrel wouldn't be the same. Of course you know, David, but the cap should have alternating red pearl and translucent blue stripes, and the stripes are a bit wider than in other pens. Donor plastic from another pen wouldn't have the same width stripes. In any case, a nice repair by someone as truly skilled as Torelli would be far better than the current state.

I've seen much, much worse. At least there was enough information in these pictures for me to assume it was a Ripley. I've seen some eBay pictures where I couldn't even tell it was a pen...

It's a Ripley!

A Ripley in need of some serious assistance, but a Ripley no less. I can't complain at the price I paid.

Anyone have a cap with a busted bottom and good top? :P

Brian,

Congratulations. I got one with same problem, the top of the cap crystalized, I used MEK to solvent glue the top, shortened the jewel shaft and used shellac to connect the modified jewel.

Good luck with the repair.

Dan
